Chaps, just a quick one to see what everyone is running, i have a side light out and a foglight out, so ithought if i have to take teh bumper off to change the bulbs i will replace them all, but what with, i have heard good things from osram night breaker bulbs but they are quite costly, share your thoughts please.

cheers

robin

im gunning for night breakers just havent had the spare cash to justify buying them yet.

i know Shadeyman runs them and iirc speaks quite highly of them!

other options are PIAA, Lucas, any decent bulb manufacturer.

apparently the blue tinted 501s give a whiter light behind the blue lenses already fitted to the h/light units.

what are you after?
more usable light?
different colour?
more definition in adverse weather conditions?

what you want from your bulbs defines which ones you should go for ;)

to be honest the best i can afford, would rather a whiter light, more usable light would be a bonus too

thanks chaps

Osram night breakers or Phillips x-treme vision

If You wanted more of a hid look You could go for Phillips blue vision but i have these in my Celica and they look good but the light output is a little low

halfords extreme are spot on. and when next to friends there just as good as night breakers.

failing that. HID H7R's?

im running white LED (dim) sidelights, H7R headlights and just normal osram highbeams. and iunno about fogs. aslong as they light up, they dont do anything over the hid anyways

If you're replacing your sidelights as well go for these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-SMD-LED-XENON-WHITE-501-T10-W5W-SIDELIGHT-BULBS-FIAT-REGATA-/120895546545?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3AFiat%7CModel%3AStilo&hash=item1c25efa4b1

I use them in my Stilo and they look great. Tbh I think any sidelight that's even slightly yellow doesn't fit the bill for the Stilo, got to be white or blue to look good with the blue inserts on the headlights :) Oh and they switch on when I press the key fob to unlock! :D

lets not get into the hid arguement ;)

Just make sure when you fit them that they are the right way round in the holder before you refit and stand back to admire your...non working sidelights?!?

I switched on the ignition and turned the sidelights on whilst they were hanging out the headlight so I knew I had them the right way round, saves getting your knuckles that extra bit of grazing on them...

was only offering it as a suggestion.

h7R shows the same pattern as my friends fiat fit xenons so there definatly a viable option.

thats cool clock, i wasnt saying you were wrong bud, just some MOT stations are proper onto retrofit hids... you need self leveling and washers plus HID compatable lenses and stuff... im pretty sure i read somewhere that any retrofit regardless of how 'professional' the install is, its illegal but i maybe wrong.

H7Rs are the bulb used for 'reflector' type hids as they have a blanked out portion on the crystal itself. apparently they fit into the H7 incandescent holes but the arc is created about 4mm away from where where the H7 bulb spec states which means that the light from H7Rs wont throw a beam correctly in normal reflector type headlight arrangements. plus the extra UV that HID creates fries the reflective coating on standard h/lamp units. or at least thats how i understand it

Good timing for this discussion :), just had a bulb out, main beam, can you guys confirm these are the correct type for my MW 04 1.9 diesel please.

because side lights and headlights arent on canbus

They are on my old (now Sisters) Stilo. Sidelights that is, not headlights.

No they are not as they're still illegal and still cause a dangerous amount of violet scatter. Unless its a projector lens HIDs shouldn't even be considered.

correct, it's the violet light spectrum that causes the awful scatter, even if the beam pattern is correct.

Hence why the very few (only Stilo and current Civic) OEM reflector HID units have a refractor lens unit in front of the bulb. Something that OEM none HID reflector units do not have.
