Hello to all,

first I'd like to say how great this forum is! I've been a regular reader and found a ton of useful information - did some of the DIYs and bookmarked even more, because I'll surely be needing them.

Until now I haven't had a problem that I couldn't fix just by searching this forum, but the time has (sadly) come; as I stated in the title, I get a weird clonking noise from somewhere in the left wheel arch when going into a right-hand bend on an uneven road (and a very mild pulsating feel on the steering wheel (I have the wheel on the left since I'm not from UK :))). I can not replicate this sound on a smooth road (in a right bend) no matter how hard I try - there also is absolutely no sound from the underside when going straight but on bumpy roads or going into a left-hand bend (no matter of the surface type).

I searched this forum and found out that drop links and tie rod ends are a common problem - I thought great, I'll just order these parts and get rid of the noise in no time. Problem is, I removed the wheels and checked the drop links and tie rod ends, just to be sure - they have absolutely no play in them! In pulled and twisted in every way imaginable, but with no success. I checked the tie rod ends with wheels on also, when the weight of the car is pressing down and I still didn't detect any play in them. That's why I decided to open this thread, if anyone has a clue what the problem might be.
I must add that I also checked front brake calipers and everything seems in place, so I don't think the rattle is coming from them.

The car in question is a '07 Stilo Multijet with 102000km (63379miles) on the clock and has been regularly serviced.

ok grab wheel while on ground any movement forwards or backwards pointing to worn suspension bushes, when checking balljoints did you use a tyre lever to check for movement.did you also try bouncing it to see if its shock related.(y)

Not yet, thank you for this. I'll go and check this out today. :)

Edit: I just remebered - I did, when the wheel was off, grabbed behind the brake disc and pulled in different directions, so I guess ball joints are also fine...?

no not correct to be 100% sure you need to push together and prise apart at balljoint to check for movement, the suspension bushes can wear if its an a frame setup making car feel giddy while driving.
check your anti roll bar bushes and links on both sides as i thought my noise was from left,it was from right as nothing was there connected.:yuck::bang::D

Hi There

Having the same problem.

Took my car in for rear axle bushes yesterday. So I said to the guy that there were also a clunking noice from the front drivers side. So the garage checked my front suspension. I found out that the the ball joint on the wishbone is warn. The guy at the garage showed me it and had a masive play, thats what caused my cluncing noice on the drivers side front wheel.

You'll find it hard to find play in the track rods/ drop links just by shaking them, my drop links were gubbed and I couldn't even get any play in them before they were replaced. Replace the track rods and droplinks anyway, when were they last changed? Failing that, you mights need to replace the wishbone or my last suggestion would be the top mount for the strut.
