Hello

Driving home today from edinburgh on the A1 my stilo (jtd) kangarooed 2 or 3 times only very slightly though but noticeable. It happened mainly at 60mph. I don't know if it makes any difference but the car had been parked for 2 and half days. I have a suspected faulty MAF and random power loss at slow speeds which people think is the crank sensor. Could any of these cause it or because its been stood or something else?

maf-i'd say so yes, although im not so sure it being stood for a few days will be the cause-it will have charged the battery just fine and your brakes wont cause kangarooing. Notice any smoke out the back when it did this? Could be EGR, have you checked/cleaned it?

Was it you who offered me your old MAF to test on mine? I had a new EGR valve fitted in march so it shouldn't be that.

yup, that wa me. Good that the EGR is new, so one less thing to look at. Could also look at the MAP sensor perhaps, although looking at your previous posts, the suspect MAF could still be the issue!!

Well about my power loss issue, it happened when i had the MAF unplugged, so i can elimate that! (only for power loss issue). Crank sensor is possible.

I've read some posts about kangarooing and things like coil packs and injectors were mentioned...sounds expensive! However those were at low speeds in low gears.

im pretty sure it isnt coil packs, if you drive a diesel? What you have is ignition, glow plug relay, glow plugs, so you could check those but i doubt that would cause an issue.

what confuses me, is usually at higher speed, with the engine running properly and at temp, you get less issues. kangarooing at that speed may well suggest injectors-have you tried some injector cleaner?
 
I thought you only need glowplugs when the engine is cold, diesel is compression ignition is it not? Least thats how my old Escort worked, my glowplugs were shagged which just meant lots of cranking until start, a big guff of smoke and then ran fine because the cylinders soon heated up.
 
yup, thats what i said, although i would never not check them-most diesel glow plugs stay active until the engine reaches a certain temp, then switch off.
 
For what it costs you could try running some fuel system cleaner through it and see how that goes. I've read that MAP sensors caked in muck can cause issues like this. Could also be the fuel filter?? If that's needing changed then it could make the car feel like it's a blocked injector?

I'll try some Millers again? Interesting about the fuel filter, i had a service in february including fuel filter change. However since then i've let it get low on diesel (in red with light on) i don't usually do that. I may aswell have a shopping spree of car parts - map, maf and crank sensor!

I wouldnt worry about it being in the red with the light on, theres in excess of 50 miles in reserve, you shoudl only worry abotu running it dry-i.e. it conks out because there is no more fuel-that would dredg crap (if any) from the tank and deposit it in the filter.

Did the kangarooing start after the service?
 
then id remove the fuel filter and fit a new one. Fill the filter with diesel fist too to help it aloong if you can-i suspect the filter hasnt sealed correctly, maybe its a poorer quality part. this iwll let air into the system.

Right i'll get a new one fitted and try that. With regards to the quality of the part i got Bosch filters including air and oil.

hmmm..fair enough, Bosch is good, so at the very least, remove and re fit the one you have, take care to see if its fitted correctly. Also, double check this, but with older cars I have always removed the fuel pressure switch/fuse before swapping the filter, and replacing before trying to start the car. I believe these cars auto bleed the system, so just double check the procedure as I havent odne a filter on these cars before, only older ones.

this job should only take you 20 mins or so, so well worth doing just to elimate it as a potential issue.

Never heard that definition in my 70+ years.

In relation to a car, kangarooing is when the car surges forward then slows abruptly and repeats the process continually. People learning to drive are prone to doing it!
