Technical Slight kangarooing

Technical Slight kangarooing

Unfortunately it happened quite a bit this morning driving 4 hours from Barnsley to Portsmouth. It was only gently. It happens only up inclines, doing about 60/65mph and lightly increasing throttle. Now i'm thinking it could be a fuel pump issue. Could i be on the right track? Whats the more likely cause, the pump in the engine or the tank? I had a filter and oil change using original filters. Also an EGR valve clean and my mechanic said the solenoid seems to be working fine. As i had this problem with my last engine the culprit must be a part that hasn't been changed. Thats why i suspect the fuel pump but thats if my mechanic used my original one....do they come with/part of engines? Then theres the pump in the tank. The MAF is new. Am i on the right track?

By the way its more of a judder.

Thanks

Phil

heyup matey, hope its nice down there - I am down in New Forest in a few weeks!

Anyhoo, your car!! I am doubtful its the pump, but im not discounting it. Juddering like this could be allsorts, but id be suspecting Injectors, clutch, gearbox and or gearbox oil, fuel pipes leaking and so on so forth. As you have excellent economy, and with that performance must be good, your pump is probably fine. You may have tiny pin prick holes in the fuel pipes - this will be evident on inspection though but only through looking at the pipes (under pressure, the pipes will suck in air, normal driving may be ok). Could also be a DMF issue, see this post https://www.fiatforum.com/bravo/212160-diesel-judder-4.html

when did you last have the gearbox oil changed? what about the clutch, any idea when that was last done? is the clutch fluid ok? When you get the juddering, any smells form the gearbox area? When it occurs, if you put the clutch down to change gear, does the juddering stop? If you are doing the same journey where it judders in high gear, does it do the same in, say, second or third?

**just thought, do the fuel pumps on these cars have filters? if so, get that out and clean it. I will do some research to find this out...

Hello

I'm at the Isle of Wight, we caught the ferry from Portsmouth to Fishbourne, IOW. I've been unable to reply sooner as the signal isn't very good roun here!

I'll try and answer your questions as best i can. I don't know when the gear box or clutch oil was last changed. My mechanic said the clutch looked ok when he had my engine. No smells from gearbox. I haven't depressed the clutch or change down gear when it happens but i will try that and report back. Regarding doing the same journey in 2nd or 3rd i've not done that yet but again will report back. Thanks for the link, i'll have a read. I could be so unlucky that whatever caused this on my old engine has happened on my new engine. However it could be the same part that wasn't changed that is causing this e.g fuel pump, lines.

No juddering at all driving back from Portsmouth last night. However i was mainly doing 70/80mph and it tends to happen around 65 with gentle throttle. Anyway i'm not too concerned at the moment. Even doing 70/80mph it returned 62mpg!

Hello again

I strongly suspect its the EGR valve after researching similar problems on the net, I'm with you on this one Clivvy. I even found this useful thread https://www.fiatforum.com/sedici/293162-flatspot-hesitation-kangarooing-stuttering-egr-fix.html especially found this bit interesting
EGR is opening under gentle acceleration = stuttering due to sticking solenoid

EGR is closed under heavy acceleration to allow more fresh air + better performance = smooth acceleration.

That bit describes my problem exactly and would be a plausible explanation. As the same EGR valve was fitted to my last engine and to this one it makes it more suspect. I also reckon the EGR is causing my flat spots below 2/2.5k revs.

Since my last post I've had the EGR valve blanked off, have done for a few months now and the kangarooing/juddering problem has gone. This obviously means my EGR valve is faulty but I am happy to leave it blanked for the time being. However if I fit a restrictor plate will the problem come back as I understand these plates have a hole in them?

Thanks

more than likely as you say there is still a hole in it, so it will still allow egr gas to leak into inlet when not wanted or also boost to leak back into the exhaust through that hole. either way if its better now blanked that's how id be leaving it.
