Hi, my 1.8 stilo seems to have bit the dust, now i remember a thread about fitting alfa twinspark cams as they were the same as c&b ones ect.

can anyone tell me a few things without the usual. why bother things and dont worry insurance is also sorted.

can a 2.0 alfa engine fit in the car, running off my ecu, the spark is a wasted spark so althought it has 8 plugs it only uses 4 coils same as the stilo and runs the same variator. and all the fiat sensors will fit in the alfa block BUT the only thing i can see holding the plan back is...

Will my gearbox fit on the alfa block. (if it truely is a fiat block im sure it will)
and do the alfas use the same maf/map set up as the stilo?? ive read they run maf and stilo runs map but i want to make sure as if there the same i honestly cant see why it wont run.

if the above wont work ill just go for the 2.0 block with my 1.8 head and 2.0alfa cams ect just to get my head and throttle ect on there. but id rather just drop a 2.0tspark in...

any help at all with the project would be great and thanks for taking the time to read this!

brainwave... are the bolt paterns on the manifods the same?? i could just my fiat inlet system to iradicate the problem of map/maf aslong as the patterns are the same

dude, why not get a crash damaged JTD and build it into your 3 door, best of both worlds then

lol, diesel engines differ so astronomicly it really wouldnt be worth it.. everything down to the fuel lines, pumps ect would need swapping. and the pressure they hold makes it dangerous for me to be confident with.

were as petrol is easy :). all i can find on the web says the blocks are the same, and the heads differ. but i cant find out the stud pattern.

going to do it the old way and visit TMS and place one gasket ontop of the other :).... ill also measure the heads to check for room in the bay.

know nothing about these things but i would imagine you would need the alfas ecu and thats the tricky part.

cant see why i would need th alfa ecu... the blocks are the same, so my sensors will fit. and the spark system is a wasted spark that fires in the same order so that will work... the only thing is the inlet exhaust...

that said i can stick with my head with the alfa cams (the way forward i think)

this is quite a good subject to talk about :), it would interesting to know whether it would work, i agree with you clock that if the blocks are the same and all the sensors fit, and the ignitions the same then theres no reason why it should'nt run on the 1.8 ecu...... in theory, then if the 1.8 and 2.0 alfa engines are more or less the same (phyisically anyway) then it should be possible to have a 2.0L stilo with a twinspark head fitted which would be quite a good upgrad for anyone who junked there old 1.8 unit (y)

Can't remember for the life of me what thread it was but a few months back a thread popped up here about tuning the 1.8 and a foreign member came along who gave a description of all the bits from Alfa he's added to his 1.8. I think there was an inlet manifold, cams maybe throttle body too and possibly a few other things but iirc he was up at over 150bhp. I'm going to search for that thread till I find it! I think it will help you to sort what you need

BOOM! Found it :D

But it looks like you've already been on it already lol

From what he's done you could keep the Stilo head, taht way you don't need to worry about whether the wasted spark and ecu will work, and you can fit the AR 2l cams as well, fit the AR bottom end and probably fit the gearbox no problem. Honza fitted the AR exhaust manifold and cat to the stilo head so the inlet system should fit straight on? Presuming there's a gain from that lol and he has a gas flowed head.

the 1.8 turned on in the morning and made a huge bang and instantly stopped. then wouldnt turn over.... eventually got it going and it was kocking like hell and a continuous blue smoke cloud out the back....

just i have a alfa engine lying around (as you do)....

basicly, taking the car apart today.. though im just taking my time with it so will take a while :). i think its just the headgasket atm (hopefull) but while the timing, heaed ect is coming off its a good chance to swap everything and cost the same when re-building (apart from time)

ok, so today i had me second day slowely fiddling away. got everything removed down to the bare block... the verdict.

two suspected bent rods... Cyl 3 ANd 4 at TDC sit 2mm lower than cyl 1+2, they are also slightly skewed towards the side of the bore and were FULL of oil and rubbish!.

so definatly going to get a alfa bottom end..... so 1.8 or 2.0 people???

will the extra air the 2.0 sucks affect the ecu??

bloody hell dude, thats not so good, but at least you have some of the parts there, why not look at the pistons and rods and crank from both, look and see if they are the same, if not then the CR might be worse and cause more issues for you in the long run (running far too lean etc)

well the heads alfa use on the 1.8 and 2.0 are identical, so my reasoning would make me beleive that the CompRatio on them would be worked out to the block and they would just wack the generic 1.8/2.0 head on them, so it should all work. also saying fiat use the same 1.8 block with their head, so compression should be the same...

ill lookinto it more, but im not working through it fast. im just doing this in my spare time so ill update as and when. (hoping to get the 2.0 XD )

aye, the bottom end will be going on complete... BUT there may be a issue with crank, pulleys ect so its all stuff i need to check.

the stilo head is a likely option, but with alfa cams. but just because its there id love to try the ts anyways :p.
