Technical Engine Temp

just getting all the pipes back on watertight is a fiddly job to tighten up all the clips.

not a difficult job just fiddly and ive got big hands.

I think the EGR valve heat exchanger has to come off to get the JTD thermostat off. Can anyone confirm?

that'll be a bonus. You can blank off the EGR at the same time.

My one runs lower than halfway all the time unless its a scorching hot day. I will be putting in a new thermostat at some stage this year. After 11 miles tonight i took a pic of it. Then i took a pic of the oil temp guage i have which i prefer to go from. Normally wait till the oil is 50 degrees before going above 2krpm.

surley the oil temp should be higher than that??? id expect it to be sitting nearer to 110...

or is this another difference from a diesel and petrol.

red line on a universal guage though not tailored to the jtd ... just doesnt make sense.

on running the water should hold at a constant 90 degree... and the oil is usually hotter than the water. (unless its got a oil cooler?)

either way id expect it to be hotter and that the thermostat should get replaced. if it was fine without fiat wouldnt have fit it, and oil temp that low id be worried about wear on the engine.

just checked on the internet and most websites state 200F (93C) is minimum operating temperature recommended by manufacturers for part synthetic oil.

so your atleast 20 degree below that

yeah when i posted it i realised that it was a universal guage. interesting what you say about the oil temp, it never really occurred to me that the oil temp might be low as well. i wonder if getting the thermostat changed will raise the oil temp. On a hot day when the oil temp is up at halfway the oil temp is hovering around 90deg so i am guessing that will be the case.

I will get the stat changed sooner rather than later then.

:). you never know. i dont know if JTD's have oil coolers? and if there thermostaticly controled aswell.

but if your engine is cooler the oil is also bound to be.

please though if you do eventually get it changed update the thread with the new dial positions to let us know....

or next time you see the water up at half take a look at the oil and see if its also still rising or if it settles about 90ish.

93 seems to be the reccomended running minimum but alot of car forums are reading 90in the sump and 100+ on the exit of the engine so id imagine if you can get above that you will be fine depending on where your oil temp is reading from, the sump will always be cooler.

if there is it will be behind the lower grill on the drivers side... if not it wont be a real grill. but a blank unlike the other side for the intercooler

Well there is no oil cooler on my Jtd. I dont really see what you are all flapping about really.
It aint getting hot why worry.
Last 4 cars i have had never had to replace a thermostat at all.

My last engine in my Mw did 70,000 in my ownership and about 130,000 in total and never ever got any hotter than half way ever. Even during that cold winter it aways got to half way and stopped there.
I aways thought that the oil and water temps stay roughly the same temp when running normally at about 90c.

I think this is a "quirk" to be filed under "nice to fix, but not worth the effort".

I'm leaving mine as it is too. It'd only drop to the level shown in Ratty's photo if it'd stood idling in sub-zero temperatures for 15 mins or more so it can't be stuck open as bad as Ratty's, but to be honest i'd rather it be running slightly cool than cooking itself half to death.

Mine lives on the Motorway, where it's always showing halfway on the temperature gauge & it's only when slowing right down or idling (usually for a decent length of time) that it drops. Therefore i'd imagine the oil is probably perfectly hot for more than enough of the time.

The harm can't be any worse than on a car used for short journeys where it rarely gets upto full temp, or ragging the car to death from cold, neither of which is something my car has to put up with. I think if things like these cause you to worry then a Stilo/Fiat is probably the wrong car

i'm not worried, just used to cars showing a rock steady "just-about-half-way" temp reading, then again most of my cars have been V6, which take about 5 mins to get to working temp regardless of outside temp! So long as it doesnt go over half, im happy, although id still like to see a decent working temperature so that I know the engine is running correctly.

As suggested earlier, im going to file it under my to look at later list, purely because of the cost as I dont have £50 floating around right now!

thanks for all the input guys, i know its like dealing with an 8 year old, but i just want my experience of this car to be a positive one! :worship:

Hi
Just to add to this thread. I have a regular run of about 60 miles and get around 55 to 58 mpg with the temp gauge sat solid at halfway. Recently it just manages to get up to 1/4 amd stays there. My fuel consumption has increased and I now return 50-51 mpg. I use the trip B to check as I sometimes use different routes that include a bit of motorway. Know that using this may not be exact but it is consistent and on 150-200 mile runs it sort of equates to how much fuel has goner in.
So it would seem that with an open thermostat the fuel increase is about 10%. Some folk spend hundreds to get a bit more mileage per gallon so the £60 or so for a replacement thermostat repays itself as well as keeping you more comfortable.
Just a mention: the temperature gauge, once warm, seldom changes from halfway and that was through 13's coldest winter and the brief hot summer. Only once did it go beyond halfway when we were stuck in a traffic jam in the heatwave, the fan came on and it quickly returned to normal.

It's just information but it might help, but for a thermostat they are expensive and the range of them is confusing.
