Hi all,

New to the forum... And to Fiat.

Bought a 56 plate Stilo 1.4 active sport last week. Feeling generally pretty pleased with myself but with new car comes new paranoia over every noise, one in particular...

When accelerating at low revs in every gear there is a whooshing noise until I reach a certain speed / level of revs. I've read a few other threads regarding whooshing noises which generally seem to relate to a split intercooler pipe on turbo diesels so not sure if this relates to my issue.

As you may be able to guess I don't know a great deal about cars so any assistance around this noise would be great. Is it normal or is there a problem I need to get looked at?

Thanks guys

Hi, and welcome to FF.

Do you have the standard air-cleaner on?

If so have a close look around the plastic casing for cracks or broke-off pieces. Mine did the same (which my son found very cool!) until I realized that somewhere in it's previous owners life, the casing was damaged at the bottom with a piece missing.

A aftermarket cone filter can also create this noise.

Gerhard.

Hi Gerhard,

Thanks very much for your response - unfortunately I could do with a bit more of a walk through of this... Not sure what the standard air cleaner is, or where I would find the case!?

Also no idea about aftermarket cone filter, how would I work out if this was the problem?

Thanks for confirming it isn't normal, I guess the next step is working out what it's likely to cost, bearing in mind I'm unlikely to be fixing it myself..

When you lift the bonnet up, it's the big black box on top of the engine (y) You can easily remove it yourself with a spanner, 2 bolts either side and one at the rear and it will come off. Once off you can inspect it for cracks etc. Also while it's off you should check all the wee hoses that surround the engine area, as they're vaccum hoses, if there is a hole in one it will "whooosh" at certain revs but when the revs get so high the pitch of the whoosh is to high for you to hear

Hi guys,

I've had the black box off and can't see any cracks, could easily be a hole in one of the hoses but can't tell...

Re the YouTube video, mine doesn't seem to make the noise when stationary / not in gear. Making it even more difficult to identify the source when under the bonnet...
