I've got the same issue with my Stilo 1.6 16V. When my engine reaches normal temerature there is stop with "loose connection" and there is no way to turn it on again. When I try to move key to "MAR" position it says "Car Security Failure".

I have resoldered the BGA processor on ECU but it didin't help.

I think it might be firmware problem in the ECU but is there any way to reflash it (like your iphone or bios)?

Hi All

Mt Stilo cut out twice today with " ASR loos econnection". The engine fault light also flased a few times and the car lost revs but dint cut out.

Ecuscan does not show any fault codes.

If the fault was due to the crank sensor would it show any codes?

not every faulty ecu can be diagnosed easy on the bench - parameters like heat in combination with vibrations are a tricky factor for testing....
Most faulty ecu's have problems with the BGA soldering of the main microprocessor (tiny soldering balls between the bottom of the microprocessor and the circuit board which suffer from hair cracks due to heat and vibrations)

Can a diagnostic test detect this? if the ecu is faulty ie hairline cracks

Probably not as everyone says keeps telling me the ECU is fine..Had another FOC at a Bosch independant garage ..

hey all

took it to the diagnostics/ecu repair Bosch garage today again after inspection they informed me that the ECu was faulty - didn go into too much detail said they cant repair mine and advised to check online - they recommended BBA reman

there is a few places on the internet ie ecu doctor - ecu testing.com

anyone had any dealings/experiences with these companys? ie service - cost for repair or a new one ecu ?

ps where do i locate the part number for the ecu?
yellowstilo think you were right all along

Hi All

I've got fault code U1706 ABS data line showing on Ecu scan.

Its advising check connections to canbus and grounds to ECUs.

Can anyone advise where can bus connections are ?

Usually car cuts out with ASR loose connection warning but no fault codes.

Is this likely to be an engine ECU fault ?

Hi All

I never found out the reason for the engine cutting out and ASR loose connection warnings, so after 6 weeks of trying to solve the problem I will be part exchanging my Stilo tomorrow.

Thanks to all on Forum for advice over the past 8 years.

sorry to hear that man ...did you get the ECU tested? as mine was diagnosed as faulty..

i got a ECU on order .. hopefully that will solve mine

Hi Moschino

I didn't get ECU checked. Thats probably whats wrong with it.

Hopefully the new ECU will fix your Stilo.

I have/had the same problem asr,esp los connection. It is a connetion problem(loose connection) in the ECU, when the motor is hot the ECU becomes hot and the car receives the asr, esp loose connection.I dont know if someone can 100% test the ECU in the same extreame conditions like on the motor(over 90°).
For me the solution was to change the position of the ECU to the battery case :) hope it helps you to.

I have driven it over 100miles over the past week now with a new ECU and it has NOT cut out yet *fingers crossed*
adisor , i was wondering if you can post a picture of the relocation of the ECU so it gives me some sort of idea ?? I would deffo be interested in doing this as they dont come cheap

moschino 02 I'm glad you solved your problem with the ECU :)
Here are the pics that you requested, the last days I drove 300 km without a problem.I hope it remains this way :)
BR,
adrian

Excellant :thumb. Thanks man

Was is straightforward? DId you do it yourself or pay to do it?

I had the loose connection problem with my 1.6 did the usual D4 connector, battery, earths all round the car, checked the engine loom for continuity, did every thing i could find for this fault here and no luck. The problem just got worse and cutting out all the time. Then i looked for a virgin engine ecu Big Money, so i went for broke and toke the ecu of and re-soldered all the connections on the PCB For the two connector blocks problem solved :) so i thought now have other faults come up after two days trouble free driving. Fiat scan showed can faults be for now there gone just random injector faults and coil packs but it dives better then ever.

Hi I own a 2002 1.6 stilo and I have the same problem.
Engine cutting out/not starting with errors including:
ASR FAILURE
ALTENATOR FAILURE
CAR SECURITY FAILURE
LOOSE CONNECTION

Fiat garage diagnostic found ERRORS NOT PRESENT
They repaired a poor earth under the battery carriage.
I fitted a new battery.

So am I looking at needing to replace the engine ecu ? or as I have seen mentioned in some posts is the crank shaft sensor a possible cause.

If it is the ecu does anyone know where I can get a virginised ecu and how much would it cost?

Oh by the way I have also been through what seems to the norm for stilos, eg:
broken driver side front spring x 2
Passenger seat air bag failure
brake pedal switch
and others I cant even remember at this point

hi all i got a problem with my 1.6 16v i had a dignostic test done it came bk with my throttle sensor im gettin that sorded i have a warnin triangle on dash nd the display screen says loose connection air bag falliure parking sensor falliure and when i switch engine off and take key out the fan kicks in and my radio not work or interror light not too plzz help thanlk all daniel

oh no, our 1.6 is now suffering this problem.
ive done the d4 connector, cleaned all the earths, battery is now charging just in case - my smart charger is saying healthy anyways, 98% charged and giving 12.4 volts steady (not running).
im now suspecting it could well be the ecu as its only been removed twice for cambelt changes, and is orginal.
faults we notice is engine cut off with asr failure, and or high coolent levels.
ive not done diagnostics yet so havent checked if the ecu is communicating.
the car always seems to start ok straight after.
