Styling £1000 spent on my Abarth this week

Feck me. I know you like the car but 3 litres of oil is bad. I would be going back to the garage to find out if they can at the very least pay for a service, but three litres has been driven for 3000 miles with low oil. Thats potentially fatal for this engine.

As for the ECU. It must be a different sound to mine. I can faintly hear mine when i switch the engine on behind the heater controls.

we checked the oil levels when we bought it (a week last Monday) and they were fine and there are no oil leaks on the car or anything like that and i have done aprox 250 miles....luckily my neighbour is a fiat specalist and had the oil in his garage.

We only noticed it because we opened the bonnet and switched the car of with bonnet open and the was a humming coming from the ecu bit. we wondered whether it could be the checks the car is doing before and after been driving? dont know whether that sounds too far from the mark?

Service booked in and timing belt being changed tomorrow....Lets hope my bad luck doesnt continue and my engine will be ok !! :(

Did you not read the bit that i said leave it over night before checking the oil? It takes a long time to drain into the sump. You could have over filled it, which with these engines is just as bad as under filling it.
If its done 3l in 250 miles take that car back to the Garage.

Sorry, think we have crossed wires...we didnt put the oil in when the engine was warm, the car wasnt driven yesterday (therefore we put the oil in last night) and the humming noise i noticed this morning upon starting it.

The correct oil level is critical in the 2.4 engines, even half a litre too much or too little could cause a massive engine failure.

As Volxstu says, if the car has lost 3 litre's in 250 miles take the car back to where you purchased it from because the engine isn't going to last very long with that sort of oil loss.

Your loosing 12ml of oil per mile, that's really really bad.

Even a good 2.4 needs careful attention, take it back while you still have the option ..

ok guys thanks - I will speak to the garage.

Also, just a quick thought - any advice on how often the water pump needs to be changed, is it everytime the timing belt is done?

Cheers

The water pump isn't an expensive part to replace but the labour costs of doing so are so its good practice to replace it every time the cambelt is replaced.

It sounds to me like the garage hasn't been very honest with you and you have a very fragile car on your hands. Take the car back to them and get your money back while you still can because I think your "flogging a dead horse".

Problem is I don't want my old car back :(

(citroen c2 with 78000 mile on the clock, no mot or tax, timing belt not done on that, making every noise under the sun, seemed to be that the clutch was slipping an awful lot as well)

The Garage will have a warranty. Get them to sort out why it is using so much oil. Take the courtesy car whilst you look for another one as the garage will inevitably have to write yours off. That kind of oil consumption it will be lucky to last the week.

Then your "between a rock and a hard place".

Get the cambelt and water pump changed a.s.a.p.

Keep a very close eye on the oil level.

And post back here if you need help with anything, we'll do our best to keep you safely on the road .. (y)

Cambelt and water pump tomorrow, service Friday and speaking to the garage this afternoon.

Thank you for your help you have really been helpful.

Will let you know how it goes!!

Thanks again

Laura

Personally i wouldnt do all of that yet. My Abarth used about 1l every 100miles just before the crank ate the engine. Just take the car back and get them to speak to a specialist on these floating crank engines. Im surprised you havnt got the sound like a piece of heat sheild loose yet.

Ok so, I had my timing belt changed yesterday...cost £351.33 including VAT...they didnt need to change the water pump as guess what the timing belt has been done!!

Oh well, at least now I have the piece of mind that I have changed it and the receipts for it.

Oil levels are running fine and the garage checked over the car (they offer this as a free service when buying a car) and said that everything seems to be ok. They said the engine noise sounds fine and the oil levels dont seem concerning...but I have still got the service booked in so fingers crossed all will be ok.

Got a quote for the exhaust...£359 from longlife, an extra £150.00 if the cat needs doing and just waiting for a quote from Tony Banks to see which is cheaper.

Having some tyres replaced today.

The man from the garage i bought it from hasnt responded to me so i have spoken to trading standards who advised I could sue him (luckily I work in that area so I dont have to pay solicitors fees etc)

all in all an expensive week but I feel better now for having my timing belt done!!

I bought some windscreen wipers from ebay for it but they are rubbish! anyone got any other suggestions for small parts like that?

Have a nice bank holiday weekend all.

(p.s why do fiats leek water in when the windows are open!!!)

Yes - how do I add pictures??? lol

:p

Ok if you have any pictures saved on your desktop PC preferably under JPEG format, once you click to add a new reply, if you scroll down to the "additional options" section of the page, there is box called "manage attachments", click on the box and then you can choose the files from your PC to upload in to the post.

Alternatively you can create your own picture album by clicking the "Gallery" tab on the main bar at the top of the web page, then it will load the gallery web page of the Forum and you should see under an orange tab just below a tab called "My Albums", if you click through you can then create and album, name it and upload what relevant pictures you want (y) then once all the pictures and the album has been created, if you again load up the "My Albums" tab, you can open your album and the pictures within, you can then click on a picture and copy and paste the "Medium Image" Hyperlink and paste it in to a post :)

The easier and quicker option is to upload through a new reply attachment (y)
