Really hope someone can help... first time poster! :)

I have a 52 fist stilo 1.2 16v

A few weeks ago when I had my hot air on in the car, I was getting a strong smell of oil. When I checked, the dip stick had shot up and there was oil all over the engine bay. I cleaned it up and it has been fine since. I suspected it was the breather pipe but didn't get round to taking a look and the problem didn't happen again with the dipstick.

The last week or so, there has been a "ticking" sound coming from the engine so I topped the oil up on Thursday night and it was running great yesterday. This morning though I felt the car juddering a little, just didn't seem to be driving right. Then about 10 minutes later the car lost a lot of power, (engine was chugging and sounding like a small tractor) and when I have checked the dipstick, you had to pull to get it out, a bit of oil shot out and the oil on the dipstick has turned like a creamy colour.

I guess I am looking for some ideas on what it might be and how much it is going to cost me!!

Welcome to the forum!

Sorry to say but it sounds like the head gasket failed, oil level shot up because coolant got in the oil passages, that's why it's creamy. you can take a look at the coolant level and color, I suspect it is now low and it might also have oil in it.

Don't know about the cost, but it's not cheep from what I hear.
Cheers,
Dan

Thanks for the response. Hopefully it won't cost too much! Will be pleased to get it fixed

One thing to add is that if I am correct, and it is the head gasket, I do not recommend you drive it for anything else then to get it to a garage since if you run it like this you might damage the head itself by warping or cracking it. and that is a lot more excessive to replace/fix!

Thanks. I have already made provisions for next week and I have called a mobile mechanic to come out and have a look. The good thing was I was only a few minutes from home when it happened so hopefully I havent don't any additional damage!

If anyone has an idea of how much I should e paying if it the head gasket, please let me know.

The gasket itself should only cost a few quid, they probably ought to skim the head which is ~£30, coolant refill - call it £10 for that, oil and filter ~£40, might need 2 lots of oil - using the first run through to get the dregs of the old oil/water mix out so maybe another £40 - couple of hours labour on top of that. Gonna be a few hundred ££'s anyways.

A few hundred I can live with. If it was going to be 450+ then I would have to rethink of it was going to be worth it.

Thanks everyone for your help

Attach compressed air on every cylinder and put it on TDC every time so it won't turn. Then listen if it's hissing any where like exhaust, oil filler cap, coolant reservoir or any where else. That would help locating fault greatly.
