this is the rear ABS ring by the way

I think the bit your referring to is the magnetic inner edge(ring) of the wheel bearing.

I've attached a photo of a Stilo rear ABS Bearing, you can see the magnetic edge(ring).

This magnetic edge is the reason the bearings are usually pressed in by professionals as they can be easily broken during installation if not done correctly.

Or if your lucky and have a Sykes Universal Wheel Bearing Kit you can do it yourself.

Managed to get a better photo of the other side, which is in exactly the same condition

just clean it , it attracks small metal parts as it is magnetic - you apparently cleaned part of it already....
Seems ok to me....

like any normal ABS ring, shouldn't it have raised "pins" where the sensor detects the location like a hall effect sensor??

Date of First Registration 26 09 2002,

with the metal shards building up like the pips would be, thats whats making me think the ring is worn down

If Fiat don't sell the castellated type now(pretty sure they don't) I'm guessing you'll have to replace the actual sensor too as the ABS bearing and its sensor will work as a pair, so the old sensor for the castellated ring may not work with the new type ABS bearings. Probabely best you ask when you purchase a new ABS bearing.

cheers, i'm ordering the ABS sensor off ECP as i have a 25% discount code, just waiting for it to turn up and then i'll look at it, hopefully it's not a castellated ABS ring and i'm laughing

No, the magnetic strips are inside the smooth ABS ring, what you see is just the iron dust held by the magnets - you can wipe it off easily.

The pins are metal files that's collected on the abs ring, which in turn causes the abs to play up
