My son broke down on the A406 in North London in the rush hour today in his 1.8. My AA ran out two months ago so I had to run to Halfords, buy a tow rope and go and tow him home. That is not something I have ever done before and NOT an experience I am in a rush to repeat!

Anyway, we think its the clutch. It just wont engage at all. Everything else is fine. Anything else that could be the issue?

He said its the hydraulic pump and its located inside the gearbox, so the whole gearbox has to come out hence the labour charge. He also suggested replacing the clutch whilst its out as its the original and the car has done 46,000 miles. I will get a second opinion. Meanwhile he has got my car again:(

Edited to add: Its not £500 apparently its £380 - my son was saying £500 as the tax it due soon and he needs to find that much money to get it on the road.

It doesnt return once its pressed to the floor...

I didnt think the auto had a clutch pedal...

iirc its the 1.2 you son has and they didnt come with an auto option.

anyway if its a manual box then it doesnt have a 'high pressure pump' in the gearbox afaik the pump was only in selespeeds fitted to the 2.4

id assume by pump the mech means master cylinder, isnt that inside the bell housing on the 1.8?
