HI people im hoping someone can guide me in the right direction.
Went to the fiat dealership to investigate the loss of power and high diesel consuption on my stilo. Paid £35 and these were the faults.

1. Clutch is heavy, needs renewing soon
2. Air filter box all smashed allowing dirty air into engine, needs replacement.
3. Air mass meter fauty due to dirty air coming from faulty air filter box.
4. intake pipe between air mass meter and turbo damaged.

I got all these brand new replacements for these faults other than the clutch, i have not changed it yet. Prior to going to Fiat I had changed the oil filter, fuel filter, egr valve, air filter and also changed the oil.

There is still no improvement to my very low MPG, 38MPG to be precise, and the rediculous loss of power. I have spent over £400 since getting the noticing the issue, and still nothing. Ive ran out of ideas.

What else can be causing the problem?

Fiat Stilo 1.9 D Multijet 120hp 2006

Thanks

I'd say egr valve too. I used to have a 150 bhp Alfa 159 and when it got jammed with carbon I didn't have the power to pull out the car park (literally). I stripped it down and it was like a new car. Egr check should be first. Try unplugging the maf and seeing what happens. If you have access to a multimeter you may be able to do some basic tests too.

Thanks for the reply.
I had a brand new EGR valve and MAF sensor put it the car. I've also cleaned out the MAP sensor, so they're definitely not the problem. Could the cause be the faulty clutch?

The clutch could be the problem but only if it is slipping. This would cause the engine to rev high but the car would not move as fast as you'd expect it too. It would also use a lot of fuel due to excessive revving.

This is going to sound really pathetic... and I'm sure I'll get Shadey taking the mick....

Get a bottle of Millers Ecomax diesel additive (around £14 or less) and stick a double dose in a tank of fuel. You won't see anything until you've done around 150 miles, but after that, you'll hopefully be amazed... my JTD improved by about 10% after about 300 miles with it in the tank - supposedly cleans out the fuel system, injectors etc. I was averaging low 40s in mine when I got it, all I've done is replace the MAF and clean the MAP and buy a bottle of millers every three months or so, and my mpg is averaging 49 now.

Using a fuel additive to clean the injection system(mainly the injectors) of an old car is a good idea IMO.

But I wouldn't use Millers, I'd use Forte. I've seen it used by mechanics but not been able to get my hands on any until recently.

Or you could skip the 150 mile part and go for an instant solution from a well know injector cleaning and testing service like this one.

thanks, took up on your suggestion. i have a new MAF already, clean the map sensor. and bought a bottle of diesel additive, the one you mentioned. Went for a round trip to london, around 280 miles, Between 70 and 80MPH all the way. Whenn i got back home, 38.7MPG, and thats mostly motorway milesc:(

sorry but how can i tell if the cluthch is slipping?

With the car stationary and the handbrake on, put the car in gear - 2nd or 3rd I think is what's usually chosen - then gradually bring the clutch up. The revs should begin to drop down below the idle rpm and eventually stall. If not and the car continues to rest at idle for a considerable amount of time while lifting the clutch or even once the clutch is fully released then you definately have a slipping. :) Try it out - takes literaly 1 minute (y)

Another silly suggestion, but what brand of fuel are you using?
I have noticed significant performance drop using supermarket fuel compared to Shell/BP standard diesel.
After a year, I have got a new used MAF, cleaned the MAP, run through a couple of bottles of Millers, and only use branded fuel, mostly Shell... I started at around 40mpg for general use, and I now average 48. 55mpg+ is possible at 60mph on a run, drops 10% for every extra 10mph.

hi i know it might seem silly but i had simiar problems but it was my intercooler pipe split on a silly bit of plastic making my turbo stop working and seemed like it was in saftey mode.

i changed every thing map, maf, turbo boost valve, egr valve the lot and still problems.

But i have the exactly the same model and year as yours and the 120bhp they only made in 2006-07 so not many made and a diffrent engine code.

I found out that the map sensor i bought was the wrong part for the car even though when i bought it it stated it would fit any jtd stilo 2001-2007 so i changed the map sensor again with compared to my engine code and sorted.

check the parts you got compared to your engine code this may be it.

do you have any warning light up or your anger management on ?

all the parts i replaced are brand new from bosch, i made sure the numbers matched with the old ones. im thinking of taking it back to fiat for another £35 diagnosis, cos ive fixed the problems they identified in the first place.
no error codes are coming up.

thanks for the reply, i only use bp fuel.thanks

Okay so i just done the clutch test.
put the handbrake on, 2nd gear, brought the clutch slowly up the rmp didnt move, once the clutch was nearly all the way up the car started moving and im pretty sure it only stalled because the handbreak was on. Then tried it with the 3rd gear on, same results only this time the car didnt start pulling off, it just stalled when the clutch pedal was nearly all the way up. also i turned the engine off, took my foot off the clutch pedal, tried to change the gears, and all of them changed with ease, as if my foot was still on the pedal. not sure if its relevant, just thought id try it.

So from what ive told you, does it look like i need a new one. and if so, how relevant is this problem to my loss of power and low MPG.

thanks
