hi there, i have just come out of the fiat dealers and they have diagnosed what is wrong with my car (loss of power + high fuel consuption), plus everything else was checked too, all for £35, so far so good. HOWEVER, these are the results.

wheels and tyre
OS front - New tyre required - £110.40
OS rear - New tyre required, punctured - £110.40
NS Front - New tyre required - £110.40
OS front - wheel badly buckled - £344.84

Clutch - clutch is heavy, requires renewing soon - £451.86

Air filter - air filter box all smashed allowing dirty air into engine, requires replacing along with airfilter. £224

Air mass - suspect air mass meter causing engine problem due to contamination by broken air box, need these repairs doing first but may require further diagnosis afterwards. - £176.51

intake pipe between air mass meter and turbo damaged allowing unmetered air into engine this could also be contributing to the enginne problem. £57.80

Battery - battery insecure, too big for car and cant be held in place correctly, this is now an mot ffailure. - £102

could anyone tell me where the best place to get these parts from is, and for a reasonable price, im a student, so i definitely cant afford £1600.
the most important right now are theturbo hose, the air filter box and the air mass meter. the rest i will get done in time. thanks

i have a fiat stilo 1.9 mjet 120

would i be able to fit a vauxhall air filter box in my car since they have the same engine?
and if so, can someone tell me which would be the correct one as there seems to be a few on ebay.

thanks

Use a bit of common sense - you've got your to-do list. First you need a friendly independent mechanic - maybe even someone mobile who will let you source your own parts. One good idea is to go and have a chat at your local independent car spares shop - they often have some good local one-an bands who they recommend.
You can get four new tyres for under £250, shop around and haggle - or go for part worn tyres, decent ones will be around £30 each. Tyres from a tyre shop, not a car dealer!
A MAF (air mass meter) just screw in in two minutes, second had 20 quid or new for under 40.
A new battery is under £75
A clutch is around £100
Can't see the intake pipe costing much. The air filter box will be a scrapyard hunt I reckon.
So that's under £500 for the bits
My mechanic would charge around 100 for the clutch fitting, so even if you budget 250 for labour, which is way over the top as all aside from the clutch are DIY jobs, you're still half the dealer price.
Use ebay to get a rough idea of parts prices, and try www.carparts4less.co.uk.

right okay thanks for the reply, i have looked around for an air filter box before, but no scrapyard seems to have my car, so i think im going to have to buy the one from fiat. i do have a mechanic who does fittings for me for around £20 quid, hes a friend of mine, but the thing is that hes busy most of the time.
what about the wheel thats buckeled, where can i get one of those from? im thinking of just buuying a new set of 17 inch alloy wheels with tyres for £395, and sell the ones i have now for around 200 quid or so. i that a good idea? that way ill have brand new set for about 190 quid.

thanks

thanks

try your local little tyre places, not quickfit etc. You can get good tyres at really good prices if you shop around. I recently had to get two new front ones, and paid £80.00 for the pair fitted and balanced, where as quickfit wanted £140.

EBay can be useful. Search for "stilo breaking" or "stilo repairs" and similar - then contact anyone breaking a stilo and ask them about the air box.

Hey

The clutches on the diesel Stilo's can be pretty heavy (mine always has been), so i wouldn't throw money at a new clutch until it actually dies.

Wheel & tyre prices quoted sound extortianate so as already mentioned, shop around. I also wouldn't recommend Quick-Fit, i had to use them when i damaged my tyre on a pothole & they were expensive & not that 'quick' either. Google 'BlackCircles' - they often have offers on certain brands that make them cheaper than a non-brand tyre. They have local approved agents on their books that they kinda contract-out the work to, so you can just search for a fitter nearby & still get the competitive price. For an alloy, your idea about buying a set of Blade alloys is decent, or if you find a car in a scrappy with your wheels you could just get one from that.

The air box might be tough to find if you only look for Multijet 120 Stilo's, as the 120 engine versions are few & far between. Dunno if the JTD 115 air box will fit, but you could also try searching for a 2007 or 2008 Bravo Multijet 120, as these have the same engine as the Stilo Multijet 120. Make sure it is the 120 engine though, as some Bravo's have a 1.9 150bhp engine and ones after 58 plate will probably have 1.6 or 2.0 Multijet's - again, these might have different airboxes. Easiest way to tell is that the 1.9 120 has a 5 speed gearbox - all others have 6 speed. Im afraid i can't help with regards to which Vauxhall's have the 120 engine. I'd imagine it'd be 2004-2010(approx) Astras but i'm hopeless with Vauxhall so i couldn't say for sure :(

Airmass meter, intake hose & battery i would just buy new. Battery's from anywhere that stocks batteries, but that's one area i wouldn't skimp on because Stilo's throw a wobbly if their batteries are weak. A brand like Varta, Bosch or Exide rather than a random unheard of make is probably best. Go for as powerful as will fit in the tray.

The airmass meter & intake hose could be available on Shop4Parts, google that & have a look. Ive used them for a couple of bits, service was good, delivery was very prompt & prices competitive.

Hope that helps,
Liam

carparts4less are a lot cheaper than shop4parts!
There are currently 181 entries for stilo breaking on ebay - so you may well be able to pick up an odd wheel or even a full set, and if you're lucky you might find an air box - emails cost nothing, so you've nothing to lose.

Thank you very much for the reply, I've managed to find an air box fix filter, but I'm not entirely sure if it will fit. Its from a
FIAT STILO 2005 DYNAMIC 1.9 JTD
I asked the dealer if it will definitely fit mine and he said yes. Cost me 50 including delivery. 90 days warranty. Do you have any idea if it will actually fit?
