hi there.

i have a 2002 1800 fiat stilo. and on returning from work weds went though a puddel.and an hour after getting home the starter motor started turnig on its own. i was told it burnt the starter motor out. but after haveing a new one fitted it still started turning on its own. then a freind spotted that the fuse box was half full of warter and i was told i needed a new fuse box.and after buying the new fuse box and haveing that fitted the starter seems to be fine. but now the car wont start at all. all fuses have been checked.

i would be grateful of any help please as im not sure what to do now and carnt afford any more parts.

thanks emma.

: ( not looking good then

Very difficult to diagnose on the limited information you've provided.

You say "the starter seems to be fine". We need to know; is it fine (working) or isn't it fine (not working).

Does the engine turn when you operate the starter motor?
If yes, does it turn at it's normal speed? or faster, or slower than normal?
Any unusual noises when it's turning.

Did you fit a new fuse box from Fiat? or a second hand one from a breakers? If the latter, was it from a 1.8 Stilo? or a different engine Stilo?

hi there.
sorry iam not very good at this.

yes the starter motor is now working as it should with no noises or problems.

and it is a new fuse box brought from a local car parts shop. and it is for a 1.8 stilo and the part numbers on both units match.

since my last post i have noticed that there is a .ASR Failure / Car Security Failure / and a Loose Connection warning when i turn the ignition on. there is also a orange warning light of a car and a padlock on the dash clocks.

thanks for the reply.

Isn't the air filter considerably lower in the engine bay than the fuse box? If the fusebox was half full of water isn't it possible the engine could have ingested some water. I'd personally be taking out the spark plugs and turning engine over and if water came out if be proper worried.

That said coil packs ain't any higher than fusebox so maybe they fried?

Sorry not much help from me. Do you have a copy of FES? An error code might give you an idea?

hi. ive been told that the fuse box ended up with water in it because the plastic wheel arch and fuse box cover were missing.and that caused a short in the starter motor wireing.

and to be honest it was only a puddle so i dont think there was enough water to get in the engine. but i will have the spark plugs taken out and checked.

copy of FES? sorry i have no idea what that is !

thanks for you help

Hi Emma, Welcome to FF!

usually ASR Failure/Car Security Failure/Loose Connection warnings are related to weak batteries, the stilo requires strong batteries for them not to throw up 'phantom' faults. if you can get your battery tested that would confirm or deny its health.

another common issue is bad earth but they can be a bugger trace... usual suspect is the 'D4' connector getting water into it youll need to check it out and dry it off, clean it with electrical cleaner or WD40 or similar

Don't worry about sucking water into your engine... if your car didn't stop the instant you went through the puddle you have done no harm!!

the yellow car with a padlock is related to the car security failiure warning you see on your dash, if the car starts with no problems then it could just be related to your battery as mentioned earlier!

FES is Fiat ECU Scan dont worry too much about getting involved with it if your no good with cars ;) its for reading the fault codes from the ECUs and doing all kinds of clever stuff.

where abouts in the country are you someone may be able to help if theyre local and have a copy of 'FES'

Good point, I was having a moment there, if you sucked water into engine you'd know pretty sharpish when the water failed the compress and the engine would go pop.

There is bound to be someone from here fairly local to you with a licensed copy of FES who could maybe check for error codes for you?

Oh yeah, WD40, every mini owners friend.
