Did anyone actually find a tool capable to press the rear bushes in on the mw?, my newly fitted bushes have both blown - ive contated the seller and waiting an answer (they were correctly fitted as well and lasted about a week before blowing), but to me they dont look up to the job (felt a lot lighter than the originals)I can order some oems and want to press them in as designed, i dont mind paying for the proper machine to do the job either.,
totally peed off with the stilo atm and the stupid rear axle
thanks guys

I've installed OEM rear bushes in 4 Stilo's using this method

https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo-guides/269439-diy-stilo-rear-bush-replacement.html

One car is now abroad so I don't know if the bushes I installed are still 100% but the other 3 are still in the UK and they are all 100%. My own car(Multiwagon) has now done over 20,000 miles with the bushes I installed and they are still 100% ...

Roy, you've fitted 3 or 4 lots of bushes in the past yourself if I remember correctly. I don't think forcing a full sized OEM set of bushes into an axle that has already had multiple bushes installed would be a good idea. Perhaps you should concider purchasing another axle from a breakers, one that still has the original bushes installed and install your OEM bushes into it. That way there's less chance of the stresses of multiple bush changes effecting the axle.

I have drawing of this tool with dimensions. You can make it with piece of metal, but you need to buy bearing to make it work like fiat tool. PM me when needed :)

thanks guys - ive been down the press side, already own that or similar press (mines a 20tonnes if memore serves),

i havent got the pronged plate, im gona call fiat dealer tomorrow and order one.
Ive ordered a new set of bushes from shop 4 parts as they lasted well last time (around 50k).
Im gona see if i can get another axle now - we have a good fiat breakers in wickford so im gona see if they have a stilo mw one and work on it before swapping them over.

Ive been doing a lot of reading, and having a friend make up a collar (to allow the bush to pass though) that should be ready tomorrow, and im looking at a set of hydraulic pullers-

or
Triple Leg Hydraulic Puller 10tonne: Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools

this is a sort of tool i would use for other jobs so wouldnt be a bad investment if you think it will do the job, and i cannot see a reason why it wouldnt tbh. do you think that is ideal?
Im laying my car up now until ive solved this, i cannot stand the noise its making again does my head in. too bad we were planning a trip to legoland today until this happened.
thanks again

Hi. I assume the puller is just to remove the old bush; theyare very easy to remove with a chisel and hack saw once you know the short cut, less than 10 minutes in fact.

The genuine fiat bushes seem to last about 60,000 ifcorrectly fitted; I have done several sets and I would say that is the average.

I usually sand them down for an easier fit and just use a lengthof 12mm stud from B+Q and a couple of large sockets to pull them in.

Good Luck.

i havent got the pronged plate

How have you been pushing the bushes in if you haven't been using a 3 pronged plate?

Edit.
I concidered using a hydraulic puller myself but could never find one with a long enough reach. But I recently found this that could easily be made to fit almost any length just by making 2 or 3 simple flat plates with a hole either end. I believe the seller accepts offers of £70 ... (y)

improvisation, actually i was removing the top plate and using a bearing from the 1.6 cam belt set up, was just about correct but causes the rubber a little bit of damage.
i did have a pronged plate, but someone never returned it when it was borrowed a couple of years back thus having to use the bearing which isnt ideal.
ive put in an offer on that set!!! thanks mate....

just got a new axle, been to check it the car has only done 22k!! is a 56 plate and has a headlong collision (driverside is a real mess). Breakers want £100 for the axle which tbh seems rather expensive.
The axle hasnt got the white markings on to show the bushes havent been changed and look to me as though they have never been touched.
The hydraulic pulley cost me £77 (£90 inc delivery).
My friend has made me up a new rear collar to allow the bush to easily pass though (cost a drink).

I went to order the press tool from kent elms (local dealer), they said sorry we dont do tools!!!! ive never had much luck with this dealer, infact ..... i wont say what i think on an open platform about a dealer.
I rang AMC chelmsford (lost the dealership a few years back) and they as usually were very helpful and have ordered the part (£16.21 +vat now) (side note -why amc chelmsford lost the dealership is beyond me, they have gone to extremes to help me out in the past - one time they were about to close and they helped me out no end by leaving the part needed with thier front office)

Now its just the waiting game for parts to magically appear though the postal system.

I think i will be getting the old axle on the sand blaster when shes removed and stripped down and check the welding seams. I may actually just put it back together and hang it up in my garage ready for the next lot to blow (be it mine or the wifes) if its re usuable.

Why don't you put the "new" axle in as it is? I mean with the used bushes in it.
Make sure you use a MW axle for a MW. BTDT... 3/5 dooraxles do NOT fit a MW.

gr J

whats the point in fitting the car with an old bush set?, they may last a year or may fail almost immediatly. The axle is off and easy to change for the sake of a 1/2 hours work i would rather be sure its ok.

cheers

From the main dealer only, unless you want to make one yourself (tbh not worth the time or the materials as it only cost me around £18)
here are the part numbers-
2000011200 Complete tool
2000000500 Extractor press piece only
2000000400 Insertion 3 pronged press piece only

side not, they do take a while to get to the dealers, i ordered mine over a week ago and my main dealers are expecting them to finally arrive tomorrow.

just a update, job done again!!!
sadly the new axle i was going to use as written of by the breaker and his plasma cutter, he offered me a discount but the axle is scrap, he cut the blooming bush holder!!!!!

so i had another look around and decided to do my axle again, the pulley kit that shadyman linked to was EXCELLENT!!!!
i had a collar made up to allow the bush to pass though un obstucted (thanks colin) and used my new press tool.
I originally tried to press it in with the three legs on the pulley but when the axle is still on the car as was in my case two leggs were much easier, and it reached with the supplyied extenders.
I got the shop4parts bushes this time (trusted part from experiace), they were oversized like the oems but the puller made mince meat of it, infact i didnt even bother taking down the outside diameter at all.
It was slow fiddly work winding / unwinding / winding etc but it went in with very easily, the job would be easiler with the axle removed but who wants to make more work for themselves.
Ive changed only one atm (ran out of time before having to go to work) and am planning to change the other again as i really dont trust the original supplied bushes, from experiance they usually blow straight away if fitted incorrectly not 100miles or so down the road so its coming out.
The car is nice and tight again on the back end, and most of all quiet....
When i do the other side i will take some piccys so you can see the puller in action and the bush being changed in situ...

i personally think that fiat recomending the axle change is down to the fact they use loads of heat when putting the bush in, in my case ive never applied any heat -im more worried about the rear springs now as they have been in and out so often they are only now covered in waxol and no paint lol.

done the other rear bush and forgot to take pictures until the end :(, but not to worry i have the wifes to do now.....

bushinsert.jpg

the axle remained on the car, the old bush was a doodle to remove with the pulley kit, all i done was hook it over the metal on the side of the housing and got it started, as soon as the bush was about a 1/4 inch out i was able to put the pulley kit on the axle bush housing and push it clear. Took about 10mins to remove the bush once started - not hammer needed and no cutting either - the bush came out complete!!!.
A worth while investment that makes the bush change a doodle albiet a bit fiddly...
