Hi had my stilo 1.6 16v for around a year now, it had a problem were it would randomly cut out but especially when coming to a stop at junctions or when idling the revs would go up and down then after a while it would cut out.
Along with these problems were that it had slight flat spots of power in the rev range and sounded pretty noisey on start up from cold.
It rarely threw up the engine management light so it was hard to code read the problem with a diagnostics tool.
When i did manage to track down the problem i had a open circuit on injector one and a cylinder misfire on cylinder 2. I replaced the injector on cylinder one with a brand new part and fitted a new coil on cylinder 2 and it seems to run alot smoother.

The car has only done 26,000miles but its had a timing belt done by the previous own (although the car only had 18,000 miles on when i bought it last year??) Anyways i fitted a camshaft sensor and retimed it using the previous mechanics timing marks.

The problem is that it still cuts out when started from cold occsionaly and the revs still hunt up and down and often cause it to cut out, I have no idea what else to check so i basicly think the timing is a tooth out,

Anybody have any timing keys they would sell me for the 1.6 16v petrol engine? or any ideas what my problem could be?

VERY sorry for the long read!! Any help would be great! thanks!

warning signs are here for me "using previous machine marks"????
what do you mean excatly?, have you used the correct tools or not?
There is not any accurate way that i know of to line up the cam and crank markings - they are ok to give you rough guidance but not acccurate time.

I had a belt stretch last year, the car appeared timed correctly, but side by side comparison of the old and new belt showed it had stretched, the car would stall - was very low on power and had a number of fault codes that appeared then dissapeared.

my kit is damaged and needs repairing now so i cannot lend mine out until ive braised one of the insets (stupid so called mechanic didnt know how to do his job and broke my tool) - im also sure he dropped the ecu on one of the members cars here writing that off,

there was a link to a site that would loan one i will see if i can find it, but im sure most people wont sell - i have always lent mine out and has been borrowed by quiet a few people on here now.

start from basics dude, sounds like hunting caused by the TB... remove the intake pipe and use some petrol on a rag and GENTLY open the butterfly whilst removing all the black gunk and crud from around the TB (im pretty sure theres a guide for it in the stilo section) then when its all shiney do this:-

1) switch ignition on (DONT START) for one minute
2) switch ignition off one minute
3) start car (DONT TOUCH THROTTLE AT ALL) and let idle until cooling fan cuts in (10-15mins)
4) switch off
5) repeat step 1
6) repeat step 2

not saying that it will or wont work but for the sake of trying it MIGHT save you messing with the timing. always start with the easiest/cheapest thing first before jumping in balls deep!(y)
