I'm currently looking to buy a new car after the clutch went in my MK1 Punto. I'm 20 and I've been driving 3 years and in the 3 years I've had 2 Punto Mk1's and both fell to pieces. I'm currently looking at an 02 Fiat Stilo 1.2 Active 3dr but am I being stupid wanting to buy another Fiat? Are the Stilo's reliable or just as **** as the Punto's? Thank you :)

I really think they're not particularly better or worse than any other car - a ten year old car will have had any manufacturers niggles or shortcomings sorted out, so it's really down to how well it's been maintained and treated during its life. My 04 Stilo's build quality is certainly better than a 53 plate Fiesta that I had for my missus, and not significantly different from the VWs and BMWs I was used to driving.
Best thing to do is have a good look at it - has it got lots of little dinks and scratches that might indicate that it has been harshly treated? Is there any service history? Is it grubby? Has it had any extras like a flash stereo, speakers etc that might hint that it's been used by a "boy racer" - that might be giid if they've tweaked and loved it, or bad if they've hammered it...
Above all, buying a car is as much a decision of the heart as it is of the head. Do you like the look of it? Does it "feel" right? Do you have lots of doubts now, because once you've handed over the cash, it's too late. But always remember, it's a ten year old car, it isn;t going to be perfect.

Yeah I think you're right tbh I'll have a really good look over it and give it really good long test drive I know mainly what to look for when buying a car as I've always went with family/friends when they were buying a car aswell. The main thing I wanted to know was if they were a reliable car but your right it really is down to how it's treated. Thank you :D

Thanks Yellow Peril I'll have a look at that now :) see how helpful it is. :D

My son has had two 1.2 Stilos and the I would say that the biggest problem, and the difference between a Stilo and a Punto (which I used to have) is that the Stilo is a really heavy lump of a car and a 1.2 engine struggles under the weight. We even discovered whilst searching for insurance that its cheaper to insure a 1.2 Stilo than a 1.2 Punto and came to the conclusion that its because a 1.2 Punto is faster due to being a lighter car.

I guess it depends what you are used to but my son found it painfully slow and now has a 1.8. I dont think I would buy anything smaller than a 1.4 if I was going to buy another Stilo.

From my experience the later Stilos seem to be more reliable? Maybe that's a bit of a generalisation but my '06 doesn't really have any major mechanical / electrical problems, just age related niggles.

Anyway, the cars are so cheap... etc etc.

How did your Punto's "fall to pieces" Its quite a random thing to say, not really pointing out the problems you had.

I had a mk 1 1.1 punto, and nobody ever told it how slow it was, and it was a hoot from start to finish, I replaced it with a VW which I hated (but it was so cheap I had to have it) the build quality on my polo was much worse than the Punto.

My Stilo has been a truely super car, love the style and toys on board, the colour, and the 1.9 jtd is THE engine choice and low insurance too, in many ways the best engine of the bunch (except I would like a 150mjet)
Its much quicker than my Punto was (much much quicker) uses less fuel than any car I've ever owned. tbh I cant think how it could be bettered
