Please be gentle! For some strange reason I have put my blanking plate where the big red arrow is. Have I made a massive mistake?

No, thats the best place to install the blanking plate as it prevents any exhuast gases(and the crap it contains) from coming into contact with the EGR. Fitting the blanking plate the opposite side of the EGR still allows the exhaust gases to deposit small amounts of crap on the EGR so it will eventually need cleaning again.
You chose the best place.
