As the title says, there seems to be a new problem developing on my Stilo (n)

I noticed it at the beginning of the week, whenever I pull away in first gear from a standstill there is a slight clunking noise coming from the front. It done this a few times and seems to happen if you use a bit too much clutch and less gas to pull away. Tonight I noticed that at high revs there's a sort of clunking again and I can also feel it a bit through the gas pedal, it only happens from 3.5k rpm upwards (I don't go past 4k so it's a narrow rev band it happens in). However when I parked up tonight I revved the engine up to 3.5k rpm and the noise/vibration was not there and didn't occur when I put it up to 4k rpm.

Can anyone pin point or give me general feedback on what could be causing this? It only seems to happen when the car's in gear so maybe a gearbox issue? Cheers for the help in advance people (y)

So would that rule out anything to do with the clutch/flywheel? The clutch was changed in August so nothing should be wrong with it :confused:

I recently checked the CV boots and they are in perfect condition, no signs of damage what so ever on them! I've taken the day off college today have a good look at it, with any luck I'll find soething obviously wrong with it :rolleyes: I'm also in the process of trying to upload a video of my exhaust note/popping with little success

Something similar happened to my sister-in-laws Peugeot, turned out to be a combination of worn engine and exhaust mounts. When under load the engine twisted a little on the worn engine mounts and allowed the exhaust(also worn mounts) to contact the chassi making a clunking sound.

Might be worth a look to see if your problem is something similar.

it does sound like a mount of some description. if it was engine or box mounts completely shot then you would most likely hear it from behind the dash. the fact that you can feel it by your foot would suggest exhaust mount and especially since you have been doing exhaust work it may be knocking or a rubber may not have been put on properly. sometimes you have to jiggle the whole exhaust system on the mounts to prevent stuff from knocking a god way to test for knocking is to rag the exhaust about on its mounts this simulates the movement of engine under heavy usage and should throw up any problems
 
Cheers for all that,well I've just been having a look around at the front of the car checking cv boots again before looking at your posts :bang: Don't have time to go under it again got work to get ready for :rolleyes:

Where are the exhaust mounts at the front of the car?

And so the engine mounts can also be a cause for this as well? Should I check the gearbox mounts also?

And if it is one of the mounts on the engine/gearbox can they be replaced with the engine and gearbox in place, with a jack holding it in place?
 
unlike a diesel which is slower revving the torque in Gadge's is spread over a wider rev range so doesn't come in with as much force.

Trust me you wouldn't want a dmf if you didn't need it

trust me mate, if i could do away with it i would!!! :D too many scare stories about them and at £500 odd, quite a costly one :eek:. too many good abarths have probably been junked because of them................ boooooooo (n)
