Hi guys,

My Stilo has had the following:
• Recon head & bolts & gasket kit
• Replacement inlet cam & pulley wheel
• 2 replacement injectors
• Cambelt kit
• Full service
Just had word from the mechanic who says that the only fault showing on his scanner is the injector rail. The car starts and runs fine, but it won’t pick up the revs and shuts itself down again. It’s stuck in limp home mode.

Does the Stilo have a limp mode sensor?
I know there is nothing wrong with the rail or injectors, could it be a wiring fault?
Thanks(y)

Disconnecting the battery and leaving it off over night resets the ECU, it wont clear fault codes but it may help get the ECU out of limp mode if that's whats happening.

Costs nothing to do, has to be worth a try.
Sorry, should hve mentioned that this was done over the weekend, but still no luck.

"injector rail"??

What fault code that is being displayed?

P0190 Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0191 Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
P0192 Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Low Input
P0193 Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit High Input
P0194 Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Intermittent

P0202 Injectors
P0203
P0204

James,
after thinking about this, i think you should look towards the throttle body control, get your mechanic to check the connections as they could have been easily overlooked or damaged when putting the head back on.
If everything is inplace get him to remove the sensor and give it a good clean with some carb cleaners or sim.
I think the P0201 - p0204 may actually be results of the original fault, ie the throttle doesnt know where to go and as soon as the revs hit 2.5k it cuts off the injectors.
im sure someone with more knowledge on the electronic side will be along soon.

Hi Roy,
Many thanks for your help on this one. The Stilo is running rough at the moment and also found out that the mechanic can't clear the fault codes. He has someone else doing that today.

I want to take the car back and do it myself, but without a code reader, I feel I'm pretty much going in blind:p. We'll see what happens over the next couple days, but if anyone else has ideas regarding the P0201-4 codes, please let me know.

As for the Throttle body, P0638, when I get the car back, I'll give this a good clean up and see what happens.

Codes are:
P0638 - Throttle sensor
P0201
P0202 Injectors
P0203
P0204

None of the codes relate to the "injector rail"(fuel rail), your problem is throttle related(P0638).

P0638 Throttle Actuator Control Range/Performance (Bank 1)

P0201 Injector Circuit Malfunction - Cylinder 1
P0202 Injector Circuit Malfunction - Cylinder 2
P0203 Injector Circuit Malfunction - Cylinder 3
P0204 Injector Circuit Malfunction - Cylinder 4

P0201-4 was probably caused by your original injector fault, your mechanic should have cleared all these error codes after installing the new injectors. Once he has done that today any faults that return will indicate where to look and what to fix.

Hi all,
Went to have a look at the Stilo today. The car is definitely in limp mode and i have no doubt that the throttle body housing could need a thorough clean up. When he started it, it very obviously sounded as if it was running on 3 cylinders, which tells me a coil pack is shot. He even said that one of the plugs was wet with fuel.

If this was the case, wouldn't the coil pack show as a different error? Or could the throttle body and coil pack be all that is causing a problem right now?

I'm hoping that once the throttle body has been cleaned, it will be out of limp mode.

It sounds like your mechanic has only half repaired the car.

Nobody expects a car with only 3 tyres to take corners like an F1 car so why are you and your mechanic expecting a car with only 3 working cylinders to act like its not in limp mode??

If its only firing on 2 or 3 cylinders it will run rough and be very under powered so it may not actually be in limp mode, you just think it is.

First replace any faulty coil packs.

Second clean the throttle body.

Third clear the error codes.

Then run the car and see what happens.

Hi all,
The car is no longer with my mechanic, picked it up yesterday. I will do some work on it over the weekend.

Coil pack has been ordered. I will clean the throttle body this weekend and do a relearn on it.

good on you, if you manage to get it sorted then i think you should name and shame the mechanic for being a bit dopey :slayer:

Video above is the engine running on 3. It wont pick up the revs past 2k and stinks of petrol. Had a look at it today. Coil packs are ok, cleaned the throttle body although it was already pretty clean.

I've found out that it's not firing on cyl-2. After unplugging the pack and running the engine, it was exactly the same. I've looked over the wiring but can't see any obvious damage to any connectors.

What could be the cause of this? Thanks guys

my money is on coil also, try putting a plug in the coil and earthing it onto the rocker cover, then you will see if its sparking or not

I had problems with coil, and as I remember the car wasn't behaving rough like yours,
and there was code for coil malfunction. The car was driveable but with less power.
So, I beleive this is not coil problem.
If you have FES - you can find injector actuator test. Also you can measure resistance on injectors.
