Im going to appologise before for lack of detail but slight rattling from engin, its loud enough to hear when im at home when i start her up. Cannot hear it while moving, but i think that might be from road noise drowning it out but im slighly concerned. I spent a while looking at the engin, holding down the plastic etc to see if i could locate the rattle but couldnt find the cause :(

Car is a 1.4 Petrol Stilo Active, completly stardard

Wondering if I should be worried now or just wait and find out what happens, let me know if you have any idea of things to try and rule out :) cheers

Have you checked your oil level?
When parking do you park on a slope? Or is the car level?
When was the car last serviced?
Did you change the cam belt recently?
Most car's have a slight chatter first time you start it in the morning, or after standing for a long time. Valves, pistons, chains etc all coming alive and saying "let's go!"

I park on a level ground on my driveway, the oil level hasnt been topped up since september but is still well within the dip stick lines. serviced 6 months ago and cambelt change at 37000 miles 3 years ago, now on 57000.

The guy who i bought it up topped the oil up in september so i have no idea what oil it is, I might go into town and get some gastrol GTX or what ever the correct one is for the car later today, see if that sorts the problem out.

I dont have AC :( just a basic Active, and there only my number plate light bulb light on my dash and thats because the srew that holds it in has rusted up and is imposible for me to get out :/

i got a 500 mile trip in a weeks time so i am going to top the oil and cheak everything, i dont wanna be broken down in an unfamilier place up country :L

cheers :)

change the oil rather than top it up. Is the noise then when the engine is warm?

Agreed. Id get a few quotes from garages, although its easy to do yourself, the cost of the oil and the filter will probably be more than a garage charges. Do the normal dipstick check, and smell the oil that comes out, if you can smell petrol or the oil is dark and murky, you may need an oil change.

Before you do an oil change, Id suggest buying this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BG-Profes...le_Oils_Lubricants_Fluids&hash=item56478b129b

Its a little pricey, but the car feels a lot better. It wipes out all the carbon in the engine, it comes with an oil additive and a petrol additive, and a engine "quick flush" (haven't actually used this one yet). Its also worth noting you will need to change oil and filter after using the oil additive.

Well its MOT is due in a months time, and insurence, so im saving for that atm, i think if it passes the MOT with no major problems il get it a full serviced with them, i know a month is a long time away but the car has already had a fair bit of money off me and need to save for the potenial mot fail :/

Oil and filter change will cost you £40. i wouldn't bother with a flush. Even a cheap new oil will be better than what you have in there.

Also, you never said if the noise goes away when the engine is warm. it is very cold at the moment so the tolerances between the engine components will be comparitively larger than usual.

Sorry it does still make a the rattle noise when warm, but I can only really hear it if I'm out side the car, inside the car its quite well soundproofed. It wasnt happy when I started it this morning, a bit too cold for the starter motor and didnt spring to life that well, sorta more of a thud, then it started and did a strange rev pattern, then went back to normal. The cold is a nightmear for the car :(

Thought instead of making a new thread il comment on this, i put some more oil in to go bournemouth and back, and made it fine :)
apart from CD player . . . . . . .

But the rattling is the manifold cover thinggy, does it have any importance ? and can i just remove it?

And my stock CD player is haunted, i thought the stilo was funny when sometimes when i slammed the boot and the radio would come on, or il be driving along and it would just turn on the traffic report for somewhere up country. Now its a nightmear, for a while it hasnt been starting when i turn the ignition on, i thought i could live with that, on the way to bournemouth it decided the CD playing part of it would not accept any CD's. I parked my car up last night and heard it rattle for about 2 seconds, I investigated it and it turns out the cd player every 30 seconds or so turns it self on and then off again, playing the radio, so its going to drain my battary :( anyone know what is wrong with it? or is it best to scrap it and buy it a new one? cheers
