No offense, but if his driving is so bad that ;-
1. He crashed into your own driveway a few months back and
2. That he scratched down the side of your own car while borrowing it (and how badly damaged/scrapped up was the someone else's thing that he hit).

Then I'm sure I'm not being cruel in saying I think it's time to go back to school & learn that there's a time and place to have some "fun" while driving, but not to drive like that EVERYWHERE. He could hurt others if he keeps it up.

I used to drive like a loon after just getting my license (who doesn't lol), but it's a quieter rural area up here with less stringent police officers. I still got caught speeding, got the penalty and the points which of course put my insurance way up still being a young driver and that is the event that made me act right and choose my "fun" moments more carefully and generally just calm down my driving style.

The last thing I'm sure neither of you want is his attitude changing event to be a full blown accident involving others & then he starts to drive more responsibly when it's all ready too late.

Like I said, I'm not trying to criticize, I'm just seeing a pattern of "damaged car post's" caused by your son.

I agree and as his insurance was third party only I have sat back and watched him work all the shifts he could get to pay close to £2K to get his car fixed. My attitude in all of this has been better to see that car in bits than him.

With regard to the damage on my car, my eldest son (who doesnt have a car), lives in an apartment block that has a narrow passageway where you can drive under the first floor and alongside the ground floor to get into the parking area. Like a kind of tunnel that runs through the middle of the building. The trouble is that depending on how other people park around you at odd angles you can end up doing a 76 point turn to line the car up straight to get it out. On this occasion he misjudged and the damage was caused by scraping the side of the building. He is also paying for this. I might add that my eldest sons wife who lives there has also scraped her car on this wall and so has one of the other residents. I usually park in a nearby side street as its just easier. But yes you are right, he needed to learn this lesson sooner rather than later and I glad that the only damage has been to the cars.

He does drive more carefully now.
