Hello everybody,

I am back with another question, I just received this morning ABS, ASR and EBD system failure. Note that outside are 2.5C. Could this mean my battery is going?

As I stated in a different thread, my car starts every morning (but sometimes after the engine turns a few times i.e. not immediately).

If not what else could it be? Alternator? had that changed less than a year ago...

Andy

LE: yep, battery completely dead, doesn't even turn the engine now, no power on dash no power on anything :( can anyone recommend me a good battery for my 1.6 16v dynamic? I know I should be looking for something more powerful like a 74Ah, but what make, size, etc?

I recommend you Exide - it is stock used in Fiat Auto Poland and it is very OK. For 1.6 enough is 53Ah. Exide number is EA530 - floor type B13

bigger is better!

put simply the higher capacity battery you have, the less work it has to do to run the electrical system. the thing that kills batterys is the constant changing of chemistry inside the cells. if you can minimise how much work the battery does then you minimise the constant changing of chemistry that take place thus lengthening its life.

74Ah - better when you use alternator from 1.9 JTD. For stock Bosch in 1.6 16V engine 74Ah what cause unnecessary load for charging system and this 74Ah battery will live much less time than stock 53-54Ah battery.

I don't see how having a bigger battery will produce more load or kill anything...

Think about it like this:-
Imagine your electrical system is now a water system. (strange... yes! but im getting to a point)

Your battery is like a tank full of water.
Your starter motor uses a litre of water, you now have a litre of water less in that tank.
Your alternator is like a tap. You turn the tap on to top up that tank with a litre of water. (You replace the used litre and have a full tank again!)

If you have a 54 litre tank as standard and you want to put a 72litre tank in... Why will it matter?? You'll still be taking a litre out and putting a litre in. The ONLY difference is the percentage of the tank that is being used!

If you wanted to put a bigger fuel tank in to give you a better range before filling up would this damage the fuel system? NO... Its absurd to think that putting a bigger battery in will damage a charging system... Go back to school

I don't agree with you - the standard alternator is fully capable of charging the 74Ah battery - of course this takes some extra time but during normal driving there is a lot of surplus current to charge the battery .
I'm driving around this way for 5 years now and never had any charging problems !

So yes, bigger is better in this case !

The only problem is I couldn't find a 74Ah one with the same dimensions as mine. Could you give me some tips yellowstilo?

Cheers

i don't now the brand anymore but i can't imagine you can't find a stronger battery with 70-75 Ah that fits the battery tray in a specialized store?

Actually couldn't find :( there was a "leisure" battery at 70Ah but it was clearly too big and it wasn't a good brand... it was halfords own make... just went and got the bosch silver 54Ah with 530A for starter. I need the car tomorrow so can't go round shopping too much.

Thanks all for the info, will keep you posted when I'll put the battery in tomorrow ;)

Probably too late now if you've already bought a battery, but, the battery tray in all Stilos is the same size so the bigger diesel battery (type 096) will fit.

There are 3 different size batteries specified the Stilo and there's a plastic ridge (item #4 below) that fits into 1 of 2 positions in the bottom of the tray to stop the 2 smaller size batteries moving, but it can be removed completely to accomodate the larger diesel battery.
.

So this is what this thing is for :)) Oh man have I struggled with this one. I removed my father's battery to change the front bulbs with some Philips BlueVision. Battery came out, saw that, spent half an hour - not joking - to figure out what the heck that is.

Ended up just putting the battery in without it.

Oh well, guess it should be enough now 54Ah... next time (yes, I'm planning a next time, I'll keep this car until it rusts to the ground:devil:) Don't think Halfords had the JTD one, I think the diesel Bosch one was 63Ah, an improvement but I shall live with it.

Thanks for the tip though Dave. Much appreciated!

In for the thread too slow :(
PracticalPerformanceCar did a full test and wright up on batteries, Varta silver came out king, halfords was ok but expensive and Lucas did worse than i expected.
