hi,
my 1.9jtd stilo has just developed a sqeeling noise, very similar to a slipping fan belt. i cant seem to tye down where the noise is coming from, the tensioner, water pump? etc. its 60k since the last cam belt etc change but don't know if the auxiliary belt and tensioner was changed.
Any ideas... all help greatly appreciated..

thats the annoying thing, it will do it sometimes straight after start up then go away then sometimes its a while before it starts :bang:
sometimes its quieter then its like the belt is really slipping...
it definately gets quieter whenthe engine revs drop off.
any ideas?

Squealing from the auxiliary drive belt can be caused by a faulty or failing battery. On a cold day, starting an engine, especially a diesel, can drain the battery so much that the alternator has to work overtime to rechage it. This causes increased magnetism in the windings which can act as a brake on the pulley causing the belt to slip and squeal.

To test if it is the belt squealing, pour a small amount of water over it while it's making the squealing noise. If the noise stops, the belt is slipping. The JTD engine has an automatic belt adjuster so you can't tighten it. Next would be to test the battery or substitute it with a known good one to test it.

davren, sorry for not getting back earlier, had to go away short notice with work. i had the battery checked and its knackered, i'll have to get another one, do you happen to know the other version of eurocarparts, saw it on the site some where, battery was only £60 delivered. would this also be the reason why the offside brake light keeps asying its blown when it hasn't and why the cruise control has suddenly stopped working?
thanks for all the help. :worship:

now. new battery, still squealing.... tried to change the belt but would not fit. contacted the dealer who assured me that it was the correct belt. how can this be? does any one have the diagram of the routing of the aux belt? has any one had this problem before, what should I change next, i appreciate that she's done nearly 200k but still going strong so don't want to get rid, she owes me nothing and still doing approx 46 to the gallon.
thank you for any help.

engine still squealing

originally bit of squealing then got worse. changed the aux belt and tensioner, quiet for about a week and then starts getting louder and louder. i can cope with that, but not the wife everytime she gets in the car complaining... ... ... garage recommended bypassing the aircon as thats what seems to be knackered, expensive job and stopped once bypassed. Or so I thought, now it seems to be creeping back in... grrrrrrrr. you can imagine the wifes thoughts, a mate seems to think i could have a "polished pullet". i need the car for 6 months more, before I go to afghan and then i'm afraid its the end of the line for the old girl, will really miss her, nearly 200K but engine sound, bodywork still ok too. sny help really appreciated.:)

Re: Stilo engine squealing

tried to dress the belt and sprayed on the sticky stuff too. if it was the bearings on the alternator, surely it would be all the time? what fan? now the bloody window has stopped working, just stripped it down and the gear from the motor that goes to the cable/sliding mechanism has sheared, why now after going straight through the mot, inspector even commentated on the low engine emissions, still how many time has the drivers window been up and down over the last 200k:worship:
