Technical 1.8 sporting excessive use of oil

Technical 1.8 sporting excessive use of oil

Have you checked for any leaks? It's highly unlikely for the engine to consume this much oil without a severe failure.

I own 2 1.8s and none consume any oil whatsoever.

The one I drive has now made around 8000 miles and is due to an oil change in the near future, and hasn't consumed even 100 grams of it.

My father's car, on the other hand, was having the same symptoms and it turned out that the piece covering the valves (I don't know how to call it) was cracked and was leaking behind the engine so it was not so obvious. :).

... the piece covering the valves...
@vladof:- its called a valve cover ;) or a rocker cover

@stilosport16v:- ive said it LOADS of times before but it could be valve guide seals you may not notice the whisps of blue smoke from the exhaust, you engine may also be 'breathing' heavily passing oil into the intake system. you may also have weak piston rings and although its pretty unheard of it is possible, a compression test would more than likely show this up.

Depends on type of oil the 1.8's an older Alfa engine
which if pushed burns oil quite rapidly - if it pulls well
and there isn't a cloud of smoke behind it when you
drive just keep a good eye on the oil level.

New oil lasts longer than oil thats been in the engine
a while.

ok thanks guys, well i had a major service last month and the engine was totally dry and there is no blue smoke at all, its passed its mot last week and the immissions was normal, im using over a litre every 1500 miles, all its done since the service was go up and down the motor way. i will take it to my mechanic to check over it properly but his words yesterday was its knackered, one of the hydraulic lifters sticks most of the time making a diesel sound to the engine, but he said thats nothing to do with it. mystery

The diesel sound has nothing to do with any hydraulic lifter. It's coming from the valve variator. Only the 1.8 and 2.4 engine in the Stilo have this. If you don't know what that is, read the info below:

Variator (variable valve timing)

Take it to a decent garage to have it looked at for leaks. That's about how much my father's car was losing through the rocker cover (thanks Richy :p ) and nobody had a clue why.

Thoroughly chech the underside of the car for minor leaks, although you would be surprised that 1l of oil can just leak and not leave any spots on the tarmac where you parked.

Sixpotman is right, if you don't have the right oil the car can consume some, but clearly not as much. I drive mine in a mixture of sporting and slow. Still doesn't take any oil whatsoever. Selenia 20k. :)

thanks for your help, much appreciated :)

mine easily uses 1l in 1500miles, 98% of my miles are on motorway... i have valve guide seals gone... 1l in 1500miles is a little different to 'all of it in 1000miles'

id say its nothing to worry about just keep your eye on it

well its been going up and down the motorway alot lately and it does rev very high, 80mph and 4k revs, i normally sit at around 65-70 to keep it down a bit so maybe thats why its using alot, is it common for the 1.8 to use lots of oil?
It's common not to use any oil. You have a huuge problem, definitely. I have a 1.6 and sits at 4000RPM driving with 140km/h and I drive and drove like that for a long long time and I did >100 000 kms since I have it and it has never used any oil even a little bit… and I use 0W40 grade oil which come people consider too thin :) If you buy a brand new car (or rebuild your engine) and don't run it in properly for the first 500-1000kms it's normal to use some oil but if it's a consequence and happened recently you have a problem. It’s a mystery to me how you didn’t notice any blue smoke or leak somewhere. Try that: go downhill, gear engaged, foot off the gas pedal, have someone drive right behind you, go like that for a minute then floor it, see if smoke comes out.
Good luck and don't worry you guys have such cheap cars I would buy a dosen stilos if I were in the UK :D (y)

riigghhht......... if its a huge problem then il scrap it, not worth repairing, ive left it on tick over for 5 mins and pulled away, dad was standing behind the car and there was no smoke, some people on here have had the same problem so not going to worry about it this side of x-mas, im not using it to go far anymore, just short runs to work and back every day, il check the oil tomorrow and see if its used anymore. thanks

Got me wrong, the only problem you have right about now is topping up. The engine will neither seize nor let you down in the middle of nowhere, so don't worry. Keep an eye on the dipstick and be happy. Do the test I told you. Check for leaks in the back of the engine.. but you should probably have spotted them on the street already. That’s the problem with changing oil every 20000 miles and buying a car whole Italy has given a good time for the past ten years. Fiats are great cars get a brand new one or one with genuine service history. Is it still going strong? Any loss in power?

like you say i should of spotted drips of oil on the tarmac but theres nothing, yes it still runs fine, plenty of power especially with a good k&n on it and it sounds fantastic, i only rev it to 4k ish every now and again so its not exactly been thrashed, i will get a new car next summer as ive found one i want but need to save for it, just hope this one lasts til then lol, the engine is making a tappet noise once driven and sounds like a diesel, if u turn it off and on again it stops, then it will do it again, i thought it was a hydraulic lifter getting stuck but apparently my car doesnt have hydraulic lifters? if i change the cambelt and re time the engine hopefully it will cure it

I have 1.6 my 2002 and my oil consumption is about 1litre per 3000km, thats quite a lot.
I bought Stilo cca 3 years ago, I made 50000 km on my own. The oil consumption is still the same on this 3 years.
I do not see a blue cloud behind, or oil leak under. I think power is ok.
My friend has 1.6 MW with similiar oil consumption...
I think some Stilos have this problem - probably depends on previous owners (oil changes, style of driving...)

really? this is my 2nd stilo, my other one was a 1.6 with loooaaaadds of engine mods and tbh it had been cained. but that didnt use any, this one has been very well looked after and uses loads. Well thats made me feel a bit better about the ol girl. thanks (y)

Now I started to use Valvoline MaxLife 10W40 - maybe it can help to improve oil consumption.
