Fiat Stillo1.9Jtd --- 147,000klms on the clock (approx 92,000 miles) Bought new, May 2004, left hand drive, been driven throughout Europe including the U.K..
For the last 4 years have driven the car using a small amount of sunflower oil (1Ltr/ tank full of diesel) as an additive lubricant to the fuel. Every fuel refill I pour 1 litre of veg oil into the tank and then fill up with diesel in order to mix the veg oil with the diesel.
I have noticed 2 things from the start of this trial
1) The car runs smother
2) The car is considerably quieter inside the passenger pod.
Aprroximatley 6 months ago I stopped using the veg. oil for a period of approx. 6 weeks and noticed that the engine noise inside the car became louder. Re started with the veg. oil and the noise level droped lower to a comfortable level where talking to the passengers was a pleasure.
I also run a Mitsubishi Shogun 3 litre petrol ---- the lack of engine noise at relativly high speed first lead me to try veg. oil in the Fiat although I cannot get the noise down to the level of the Shogun, but still very comfortable in the Fiat. Any comments or is anyone brave enough to try and confirm the above?

I used to run bio-diesel on my stilo jtd and it was really wicked stuff.
I done more mpg and no smoke at all from the exhaust. But now I cannot get it as they shop I got if from closed down and haven't got the space to make my own at the minute.

I need to fill the car up today so I will have to go down to aldis or lidl to get 1L of sunflower oil.

So how does this make the engine quieter as there is already biodiesel in diesel?

Would the sunflower oil make a difference in starting the car in the mornings as I had trouble last winter with it, until I thinned it out with normal diesel.

Any mpg difference just by adding 1L or sunflower oil ????

Are there any issues with running bio diesel? I read that it can block the filters?

no its fine but the guy in the garage did tell me once you have used a couple of full tanks on it then it will bring all the sh*t up from the bottom of the tank and then you will just need to change your fuel filter and then its job done all fine from there.

but i did get a tint of strange smell after a while from the exhaust buy using it. nothing ajor at all. but its good not smoke or anything from the exhaust even when your really boot it. plus i didnt get any power difference, if anything it felt like i had a little more but it want a big difference.

Well I haven't tried this yet but I have been shopping tonight and have bought 1L of sunflower oil but am just waiting to hear back on this thread before using it as the weather is getting cold now and not sure if it will effect the car from starting in the morning when it's -1

Hi All,
I went on a short course some time back on how to make biodiesel and the ins and outs of using it.

I had a Shogun and planned to use it on that, the problem was, I couldn't find any chippy, take away, pub etc that could give me their used oil as other people had beaten me too it, seems like there is a big trade in used oil!

Anyway, what you need to know:

Biodiesel made from used cooking oil is first filtered, then warmed and mixed with a small ratio of ethenol (the ratio has to be pretty much exact and is calculated after a testing process).
It's then washed, filtered again and then is ready to use.
The 'thickness' is much less than new cooking oil and can easily be used at low temperatures. It doesn't need to be preheated before going through your injectors.

New cooking oil can in theory be poured into your tank and used straight away on warm days, but when it's cold it needs to be preheated otherwise it will be too thick (try leaving a bottle outside on a cold day and you'll see what I mean!)

As to the filter being blocked, this is likely to happen, the reason is, normal diesel is actually a very dirty type of fuel, I think I heard somewhere it is actually a bi-product of petrol?.
Biodiesel, especially the carefully filtered home made stuff, is very clean, it actually acts like a detergent. Basically it picks up all the rubbish from the diesel and puts it into the filters. After using biodieself for the first few tankfuls you will probably have to change your filters twice, after that you should have an extremely clean system!

Hope this helps.

Cheers for that. So would it be ok to use 1L of sunflower oil on a full tank in the cold weathers. Plus does it actually make the engine more quiet just by adding 1L of sunflower oil in every full tank?

People will think I'm wierd poring in sunflower oil in before fuel ha ha, will have to put it in a jerry can

so if i put in sunflower oil in the car it would be fine?, i was under the impression that this was a big no no on the jtds / multijets because the common rail would get blocked if the temp dropped.

If it's correctly chemically cut bio diesel then there shouldn't be an issue, veg oil on it's own isn't bio diesel though.

Tbh 1L in a 59L isn't going to cause much of an issue.

In the winter using a lot of veg oil can cause it to thicken up in colder temps, but if it's getting out of the tank ok then it's not likely to be to thick by the time it gets to the injectors unless your running it in uber cold temps like the arctic circle.

only problem is you drive round constantly being hungry!;)

i dont know where you heard by-product of petrol... all your plastics, solvents, oils, etc etc come from crude oil... GCSE Chemistry covers the basics... google 'fractional distillation of crude oil' and learn your self summat!(y):D:p

Brian hall how does it make your engine quieter as 1L of sunflower oil in a full tank is hardly anything. Don't understand how that would work, and how come you don't add more than just 1L

Diesel is a bi-product of the refinery process to produce petrol from crude oil.

oh. how come? i used shell v-power diesel before and had a extra boost with it but though it was over priced for what it was.

ok well i will not add nothing when putting shel fuel in.
but as tesco is closer to me and i know its bad stuff but needs must, what would be the best thing to add to that??

I've just tried Millers Ecomax, just added it to the first tank so will take a while to get going, but from what others have said it makes a big difference.
I think there may be a bit of a placebo affect from it though!
That works out at about £1.20 per tankful, the same as a litre of sunflower oil!
