Technical nre owner yesterday and having a few problems :( help :D

Hello

I had the preheat fault on my Stilo and it wasn't the glowplugs. On mine it was the wiring harness (consists of 4 wires)that runs from the heater relay/module to each glowplug. One of those wires had a bad connection to one of the plugs therefore bringing up the preheat fault. I'm sorry if you have mentioned this in you post but does the fault come up everyday? I should have asked this first :). The error on mine was intermittent and although Fiat reckoned it was a faulty plug my mechanic and my local car spares shop thought otherwise. They were right (y)

hi phillip and thanks for the reply , i fixed the wipers to day using the guide on here about the greese and they work 100% now :)
I bought a mutlimeter today as i suspected some faul play by the garage that serviced the car and maybe they didnt change all the glow plugs ? :O
Mulitimeter showed 3 matching readings and one had no reading wat so ever (#1) so maybe the garage didnt change one glow plug?or as you say the wireing harness? i have just bought a new plug and hopfully gona get it fitted tomorow, just out of curiosity how much did yours cost to fix the wiring problem and did you do it your self?
Gona have a go at the stereo ignition cable tomorw.

It cost about £35 inc. VAT from Fiat and a garage fitted it for me and charged £40. Just out of interest does your car start ok first thing? Mine does so the garage suggested changing the harness first (cheapest option first (y)). I did have a diagram of the part printed out for me from Fiat but I don't know where it is!!! If you want I could try and take a photo for you tomorrow.

Can probably help with the ''preheat failure'' light. Mine came on 5 years ago, changed the heater plugs - no difference. I later found my self in England where I had the timing belt replaced, much cheaper in the U.K than here in Spain and the garage that did the work noticed the warning light on and did a diagnostic. The fault was in the circuit board that controls the fuel gauge and temp gauge etc on the dash board. The mecanic said run the car there's no problem with the plugs or the preheater. That was 5 years ago and no problem with starting, first time every time. However, the fuel gauge packed up 8 months ago (no problem, just use the onboard comp. to give me an indication of the range left in the tank and also the temp. gauge as now failed. Fiat garage here confirms the the circuit board as now died, new board 630 euros fitted, will wait until I am next in the U.K. to have new one fitted.
With regards to the slight black cloud when accelerating hard, how slight and how heavy on the pedal, could just be over accelerating and unburned fuel - try a little less pressure on the pedal.
Hope this helps and enjoy the car.

philip are we talking about the lead that has the four wires in it that comes from the glow plug relay then down on to the plugs? the one that we put the mulitmeter in to test the glow pluds used in one of the guides on here? im gona get the glow plug changed tomorow cause i have bought the plug now and can fit it my self probably . its cylinder 4 btw.
if that fails then ill try this lead. for £35 its gota be worth trying.
Basicly the lead thats used in this guide is then one you had replaced ?

And yes the car starts first time every time and runs lovly , literatly the best car i have ever owned , you get so much for sooo little money its un real :)
Just a shame about these littly teething problems but what car dosent have them i suspose

Brian hi and thanks for the input, When you talk about circuit board , do you mean ecu or somehting different?
My error comes up as "plate heating relay" and EGR but have cleaned the egr and that has gone away. but i cannot find any thing about this plate heating relay any were.
if the new plug tomrow fails im gona try phillips idea of the relay lead , if all fails im gona give up and live with it :) (but this will hard as im such a picky person LOL)
Fixed the wipers to day WAHOOO :D
Is the pollon filter difently down the drivers side foot well? casue i wana remove it and try phillips theory.
Thanks again for all the input people i really am gratefull :)

UPDATE!!!
Im am sooo f-ing pissed off right now, Had my car serviced 3 days ago with new , pollon filter / air filter / oil filter / fuel filter / oil / glow plugs x 4
So was obviously not looking into my fans being bad because of pollon filter, but what everyone keeps saying about pollon filter resolving this problem i just couldnt help my self but to look at the pollon filter...
so i did ten mins ago...... and guess wat i have found..... A DIRTY OLD POLLON FILTER!!!!
removed it and fans work 100% as they should
Also becasue i still have preheat message after 4 new glow plugs i was stumpt there untill i done the known test on here with the multimeter and found cylinder 4 plug to be dead !!! im horrified what did these guys do? :(
im so mad right even though my fans are fixed :(

Yes thats the part, it might be worth a try.

Like you said its a shame about these little problems but they are decent cars. I nearly gave up on mine when it had an airbag failure, preheat fault and a flickering triangle on the display. In the end it cost a small fortune to fix but now its free of fault message, beeps and lights :).

You'll get it sorted, sometimes it can be a case of trial and error .

Nailed it today :)
Changed cylinder 4 glow plug my self :) and then installed new and fresh pollon filter and then rewired the stereo off the cig lighter and then used fiatecuscan to remove all fault codes.
NO preheat failure now :) thank god :D
Fans all work 100% great :)
stereo shuts on and off with ignition now :)
Sqeak fron back shock was infatc somthing else that i sprayed with wd-40 and is now gone :D
only things left to do is get the service indicator working with this fiatecuscan and get some new parking sensors as my ones have been removed from my back bumper LOOOL
Thanks for all the help. im sure ill be back soon though :)

Hahahah i no its discusting aint it. couldnt actually believe my eyes last night when i pulled the old pollon filter that clearly hasnt been changed in about 50 years :p
and the glow plug today was the same.
Rang them this morning and asked what was going on and the said that every thing got changed 100%.
Will never be using them again :(
Trying to do most of the stuff my self now.Really wana ge this service light reset, im trying to get to the bottom of it now :)

I'm glad you got it sorted (y) Although its not very good about that garage (n).

How did you get your stereo to turn on/off with the ignition? I've got a Pioneer MP3 stereo in mine which Halfords fitted and they could only wire it to be turned on/off by the power button. It's not really a problem for me but I just wondered how you did it!

Hope you're going to "see" the garage who claimed to chave changed the glowplugs and pollen filter. You might want to get one of these. http://bit.ly/sFkbGd

I like it :D

You need to take the switched ignition input for the stereo (stereos usually have a red and a yellow feed, the yellow is the switched, red is permanent live, or it might be the other way around - the adapters usually have some sort of crossover enabling them to be both connected to permanent live if there is no ignition feed on the car side of the connector) - and connect it to a switched feed - there are two you could use - one is the blue wire going to the cig lighter - take off the side paned and pull down the wire and splice or scotchblock a feed off it. The other is the orange wire going into the ignition key switch, but personally I wouldn;t want to tamper with anything going into the ignition just in case.

I have taken a feed off my cig lighter to supply a couple of 12v sockets tucked behind the dash - one has my phone charger plugged in, and the other my bluetooth fm transmitter. If you are using the feed for something like that, the black wire is convenient to splice for the earth too.

What he said , Cig lighter is the way to go tbh and very simple, if u need any help im sure we can be a service :) if ur local to kent pop it round and ill give u a hand :D
Although i leave for egypt / sharm in about 12 hours :D

I went to halfords to buy the wire and said to them what i was doing (orignally i was gona go from under steering wheel) and they pointed me in the direction of the cig lighter :)

Hi seth151,brillant name(same as mine),brillant car(same as mine). These little babys once sorted of the teething troubles are superb.Well worth sticking with it.This is most probably a build up of faults from a lazy last owner.Fiat ecu scan will make things a dam sight easier to repair.Best car ive ever had.
