This week my Stilo has developed a clicking noice when driving, but only when I am off the power and speed is decreasing. The clicking slows as the speed decreases.

Its like when you are riding a bicycle and when you stop pedalling to free-wheel the sound that comes from the running gear. (Peculiar analogy?!)

Does anyone have any idea what this is? It has recently had a full service, replacement drive shaft and drop links...

if its the 1.6 it is the hydraulic tappets (im asuming its the same for the other engines)... Nothing to worry about, its normal... I use 15w40 and its more prominent when its cold but you get it on 'rolloff' and 'overrun' as the oil pressure drops

It's the 1.4, seems to be getting worse! I put a litre of 10w40 semi-synthetic in it yesterday. I'm getting worried, could it be something to do with the clutch as when I have passengers it shudders off the line... I have also noticed that the clicking is not as prevalent when the clutch is depressed?

yes then :D

the release bearing is probably on its way out, this could manifest as shuddering with a bit of weight in what milage has she done? are you anygood with the spanners?

Thanks Richy. I'm on about 115,000 miles iirc and on the original clutch as far as i'm aware. I dont actually have any spanners unfortunately but will buy a set if you have any guidance?!

impressive milage if its on its original clutch!! (mine was shot in half that)

were all hear to help if you want to undertake something like this but i wouldn't advise it as you first job, there's far easier places to start :) (although i am a great believer in fixing it yourself;))

if you still want to go through with it then we'll all help!

where abouts in the country are you bud?

Thanks for offering your help Richy, as I'm sure you can tell by this post I bottled doing the work myself and just left it to get worse. Which it has, so I think its time to change the clutch!

Apart from shuddering of the line with passengers on board, and generally clicking on deceleration, the clutch is now slipping from time to time. A local garage quoted me about £350-£400 all in. Does this sound reasonable? And do you think replacing the clutch will solve all these problems?

Anyone had their clutch done (1.4) and can tell me how much it cost?

Hi All,
I would just like to ad this to the post - Not saying it will be your problem but may come in handy down the line.
I once had an annoying clicking noise coming from the front end of my last car (Rover 75 - Sorry !). It would always get louder under acceleration an softer at low speeds - I looked everywhere to find the problem for weeks with no joy. Eventually located it . . . It turned out to be a large headed nail bedded into my tyre tread and well hidden ! The tyre pressure was not effected and the noise was really annoying and quite loud. Regards alsimmo

Thanks for the thought, although the clicking is on deceleration only!

Anyway, the car is back from the garage £450 later! New clutch and servo pipe which had broken (oddly)

Clicking still present though! Very annoying, so do I need to take it back to get the release bearing replaced?

Help would be much appreciated before I start throwing good money after bad!
