Hello,

Help needed here.

My 52 plate Stilo Jtd, 103K, wont start. It just clicks when ignition is turned.
Has new battery fitted today. Still wont start.
used it for a 75 mile trip 2 days ago.

FES shows error P0380 - Board Relay, Thermostater or preheat. ECU.
Front brakes, nearside arm were changed recently. front brakes squeak sometime.
Also changed fuse connectors/terminals on battery recently.

Can any one help.

Thanks for the reply.

Could you (or someone) help me with the location for the relay to check. How do i know which one to replace.

any help much appreciated.

The glow plug relay is on the black box on the bulkhead at the back of the engine compartment. However...... P0380 = Glow Plug/Heater Circuit "A" Malfunction. It doesn't necessarily mean you need a new relay.

There's a guide to checking the glow plugs here:

https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo-guides/151734-dealing-preheat-fault-message-stilo-jtd.html

Assuming your battery is fully charged, the clicking noise is likely to be a poor engine earth connection or a faulty starter motor.

Many thanks. I will give the earth connections a check and have a look at the glow plug module as well. Get a multimeter and test which cylinders are not ok.

I have also lost my reverse light even though the bulbs are ok. Could this be related to the poor earth issue??

yes... and now you have said that id be seriously suspecting g/box earth.

afaik the reverse switch is grounded through the g/box and the starter motor is definately grounded through it. clamp a jump lead onto your box (if thats what your into) and clamp the other end on your battery negative. now key it over and see if she runs and if the reverse lights work. if they do its your ground lead which should be connected to your passenger side chassis rail and the front edge of the g/box iirc

Thanks again. I have successfully diagnosed that glow plug on cylinder 4 (Yellow cable) is faulty. No reading at all on the multimeter. Other 3 returned readings.

Have checked my earth to the best of my ability. Placed car on stands and went underneath to check connections. Nothing seems loose at all. checked the connection to the passenger side chassis (as mentioned)/ loosened, cleaned and retightened - still car still will not start. I seem to have lost the clicks i heard earlier. On turning the key, i hear a "krre" - sounds like turning a little nut.

I also tried the jump lead connection ( with little confidence) using a booster - I connected the positive to the Gearbox housing and the negative to the battery - had a few sparks.. Engine will still not turn. Did i do it right?

Any more pointers will be much appreciated. Anyone in the Enfield, London area who can help. Please....

Thanks.

To test the engine earth lead, you need a single jump lead, not a booster. A single jump lead will have the same colour both ends. Connect one end to the gearbox housing and the other to the battery negative terminal.

By using a booster and connecting the red lead to the gearbox housing and the black lead to the battery, you may have caused further damage.

Waow.. further damage ?... will FES pick that up?. i checked for errors after the "silly connection".... i still have the P0380... Should i try the single jump lead to check ? Thanks for the info on the booster... i had no idea what i was doing... just wanted to hear the car's engine sound again..

Yes.... by connecting a single jump lead between the gearbox housing and the negative battery terminal, you are testing the car's battery earth lead by substitution. Once the jump lead is connected, try to start the car. If the starter motor works, this would indicate a problem with the original battery earth lead.

Hello,

I followed directions given, checked all earth connections. Sure enough, the earth cable on the solenoid (starter) was loose. tightened that. checked all relays and fuses.

Car is still not responding. When the ignition key is turned on - there is no click. Am i heading for a starter replacement? could i recondition the existing one?

can i replace starter myself? any advices?

Hurray.. Car breathes again after many hours of work. I replaced the starter motor - (got one off ebay) - and on the first turn of the key, She sang for me.

Many thanks to all of my helpers. could'nt have done it without you..
