Hey everyone, right so I'm 17 and looking to get a Stilo for a first car after seeing one in the flesh briefly at a used car showroom several months back, I loved it.

Been following the forum for a few months now but I'm wondering if it would be worth getting one, I don't really want to do anything to it in terms of modifications unlike most 17-year olds, just a few questions really.

The furthest I'll go in terms of mods is a HID kit, a retrim on the interior and a badgeless grille and if necessary a more sensitive CANBUS alarm system (for the area I live in).

Is the sound system any good? as in the bass and clarity. I'm not really a fan of subwoofers, flashy head units etc. so a decent stock setup would really help me.

Whats it like on the motorway? I've got to use the motorway at least 3 times a week so it needs to be comfortable and not too loud, further more if anybody remembers the RPMs at 70mph that would be really helpful. Thinking of a 1.4 or 1.6

I've looked at all the FAQs and reviews etc as well

Hi there, stilo is a good choice. Personally I would go for a 1.6 as it will be saving you money driving tidy on a motor way compared to a 1.4 with high revs on motor way and you will have to put your foot down just to get speed.
plus 1.6 has more power if you need it, and but you wont have to rag the car to get it up to the speed limit of 80 mph lol

but the 1.4 will be cheaper to insure and run. It is quite a peppy engine. Remember the op is 17. I wouldn't bother with HID's unless the car has them on. The stilo has a very good but complex computer and adding electrical items can causes more problems than it solves.

Stereo wise the stock speakers are pants but easy to change.

Check out the jtd engined stilos, I'm biased perhaps but grp 5 insurance must mean something to a 17 yo, esp when you throw in the extra power over the 2 petrol models offered.
Try and get leather if you like it, cos second hand interiors are hard to find.
Speaker upgrades are a simple mod, changing headlight bulbs are not:bang:

Take someone with you who knows about cars and make sure everything works-good luck

I have a 1.4, it is insurance group 4. Might be worth mentioning the 1.4's and 1.2's have 6 gears to bring the revs down on motorways. But even still the revs at 70 are quite hight. Its 3000rpm at 70, 2500rpm at 60 and 2000rpm at 50 in 6th gear. I return between 38-44mpg depending on how i drive. Better than my mates 1.6 focus though which is nearly 4000rpm at 70 so 3000 doesn't do that bad. For terms of quietness and comfort at high speed its not amazing but i hv found that i was doin 90mph without realizing it! No shakes or wobly steering wheels like my old 106 :p T power difference between the 1.4 and 1.6 is not that much. The 1.4 has 95bhp and the 1.6 has 105bhp (i think-sorry if i'm wrong) and because of the gear ratio of the 1.4 it still pulls like hell and gives most cars a run for their money :D

For your age it is a great choice of car. I wish i had mine sooner than i did. If you an afford the insurance i say why not.

Just my 2 pence :)

I'd disagree. The 1.6 is far more problematic than the 1.4 engine, and will drink more fuel. The 1.4 is more than powerful enough unless regularly carrying more than 1 passenger.

You've got a slipping clutch my friend

2000 rpm at 50mph and 3000 rpm at 75 ;)

I can't comment on MPG of my 1.4 as it's LPG, but driven well and it'll return very good MPG.

The 1.4 is now a group 10 under the new 1-50 insurance rating system, but that doesn't affect price from experience.

As for HID kit, it's both illegal and dangerous for other road users. I've seen other Stilos with them and they glare badly, just like most reflector headlight units. Just fit some updated bulb like Osrams night breakers and you'll be fine as they're fairly good headlight units anyway (y)

Haha i stand corrected on the insurance :p i still go off the old style. ye its more like 2800 rpm at 70 but i just rounded it up :D my clutch is just fine (touchwood)
But yes agreed that with smooth driving you will easily see 42mpg+ but with a heavy foot around 38mpg. In the 1.6 (according to other threads) you'l only get around 36 mpg.

I have a 1.4 the 95bhp model and i think its great fun me being 18 as well so i know about insuring one at this age...unfortunatly mate unless you "front" your insurance policy you aint getting one im afraid (n) insurance for me at 17 was £4000 on my own so for the first year best off on parents policy or something...

As for the power its plenty enough for a first driver....and then some.

You can live with the standard door speakers but worth changing depending on how loud you listen to music :p

With the 6 speed gearbox motorway has never been an issue not to noisy at all in 6th at 70.

H.I.D's are pointless on the stilo im afraid. as 'most easterly pandas' said far to much glare i think they should be removed from all cars as they blind everyone else just so one driver can see a little bit better :bang:

Insurance will be very much dependent upon location as overall the Stilo is a cheap car to insure as it's typically a grandads car and not a common youngsters car.

Fronting is illegal mind so I wouldn't even suggest considering it. £4k insurance is defiantly an extreme example. Would never have cost me that in my postcode area luckily :)

Cost me £1100 to insure when i was 19. Now its only £600 i'm 21. To be honest it doesn't matter what car you buy these days. If your a young driver you will get completely ripped off on your insurance for the first 2 or 3 years!

lol, when i was 17, my first car was a mk1 panda (facelifted model), its was 1000cc and i bought it for £1000 and my insureance was £1200!!!.
ii was quoted £2500 when i was 23 for a coupe turbo (was'nt really suprised!) and now at 31 i'm paid £520 for my stilo abarth......... and even i thought that was high! :D ..............

Insurance companies just dont want young people driving at all so they give us stupid quotes.... They think we are going to crash like 6 times a day :p i have put my parents down as the named driver so i can afford it, i know its ilegal but its the only way i can afford it.... police wonder why people drive without insurance theres your reason :bang:

The insurance should be goverment controlled just like tax and MOT's there is a cap on how much they can charge for mot and tax but no cap for insurance....

Sounds like you had a mk2 Panda ;)

Was £1280 fully comp for my first year on my 1.1 auto panda :)

Then £580 the year after with a years no claims.

Having your parents as named drivers isn't illegal (y)

Working in insurance I see it from the other side and tbh there are good reasons for insurance being the price it is, not saying that it's affordable, but unfortunately too many people have played the system and mucked it up for others (n)

After my accident I had a stiff neck for a while, and a few companies got in touch re whiplash, my neck wasn't so bad and despite an easy claim, I didn't, everyone who does is banging up ALL premiums(n), that being said if you need to claim and can legitimatly, then do!

My 2.5 Alfa was only about £260 per year fully comp, the stilo is around 160 or so, then I am over 40:eek:

I just got a 2002 Stilo as my first car. I'm 34, homeowner, married, no kids. First time driver, as I've been riding a vespa for 8 years...

Car cost £1200 and £2000 to insure TPF&T!

A true indication that age means nothing.

Thats crazy money did you check out the insurance area of this forum they do discounts for forum members, saved me a couple of hundred. If you live in a crap postcode it makes all the difference :( My insurance with adrian flux was only 820 tpft 24 with 1 accident. I use go compare for searching through most but stay away from confused they screw your credit rating just by searching!!
