strange little noise

Ok i know my stilo is new and its going to make some funny little noises as it loosens up a bit. But this one just started today and it is minor but im just wondering if anyone has had this as it seems a little strange.

On ignition only, fans off there seems to be this very slight droning sort of computer fan type noise coming from behind the dash board. When i turn the ignition of it seems to slow down and fade out to the click where the interior light fades in. Is there any sort of little cooling fans in the dash or anything like that which might be causing this?...could always be a cooling fan in the engine bay...but the temp was normal.

Do you think the noise i am hearing is the start of somthing to be worried about or is it just one of those noises.

Also my handbrake handle slipped forward, but hey it's Italian thats to be expected.

Chris

Re: strange little noise

Take it back to your dealer or place of purchase & express your concerns. If your car's new thats what your warranty is for. I have a droning noise when I first open my door to get in but I think that's the fuel pump & is normal( I have the abarth model).

Re: strange little noise

Im sure its probably nothing, more than likely only noticed it cos the stereo was off and the blowers were off. I ve noticed since tho that i can hear 3 little quick beeps when i turn on the ignition. But the check comes up ok, no warning lights.

TO be accurate the sound is more like that subtle wooshing noise you get sitting next to a laptop, which is making me think it might be a fan or something... the 3 beeps tho, never heard them before.

Its probably just something i havent noticed before. My street is very quiet and i only noticed it tonight when i parked there.

I'll give the dealer a call in the morning.

Re: strange little noise

Could it be the the electric power steering pump priming itself? This is on the right of the steering column; you can see it if you open the fuse panel. Perhaps stick your ear near it, then at least youcan illiminate it.

Re: strange little noise

If its a faint crickly cracily sound from begind the dash when you slow to stop, i'd be interested in this. I have the same thing at the moment! I was wondering if it was 'cause it was really cold outside at the moment!

Re: strange little noise

Which Stilo do you have to be exact?

On the Abarth when you open the door it activates the pump to prime the selespeed system so there is a whirring noise. Again if the Abarth it could be a fan behind the dash as there is one on the processor of the NAV+ system.

If you have climate control it could be the auto actuators on the air distribution flaps moving them with the ignition on.

As you turn the wheel it could be the electric motor for the power steering.

Or of course the Fairies could be nesting in your dash

Re: strange little noise

54 Plate 1.6 Active Sport, The noise (if you can call it that, its almost like the blowers are on slighty). It only happens when the ignition is on MAR or Engine running but at that point its bearly noticable.

To clairify this is sitting in the car with manual blowers, all off, stereo off everythign off, with the ignition at MAR.

I was reading the manual tonight which mentions Independant Addtional Heater, which mentions that when ignition is at MAR which lets you heat the passenger compartment when the engine is off, window defrosting, heating the engine coolant etc which kicks in below 12oC. Now i am not sure if the active sport has this fitted, but it is bloody freezing outside and something like this would explain this sound quite well. It does sound like a heater or a fan.....anybody?!?!

As far as the 3 beeps im pretty sure its just the computers check ok signal.

To be totally honest it's not sounding like anything is actually wrong, more just like something i havent heard before and now i have heard it, it will bug me till i know what it is.

My dad always said just turn the stereo up..maybe i should heed his advise and stop listening for creaks and beeps.

Chris

Re: strange little noise

Lets clear this up

The static noise: All stilo's make this I have driven or been in. I think it has something to do with what makes the needles move. Just gentley rev it and you'll hear it as the rev counter falls.

The whiring noise is again present on all of them i have driven. most likely power steering pump but i think if its made by all of them then its something thats there for a reason.

The Quieter the car more things you hear!

If you listen carefully, you can hear the fuel pump prime to!

Re: strange little noise

Another once common problem, i've been experiencing it recently, is the electric radiator fan starting when you start the engine, even though the engine is cold. Its down to a poor connection somewhere, letting in moisture or such.

Re: strange little noise

I get the same noise in my dash, fan like noise which stops with a click a few seconds after the keys turned off - Does not bother me though, I just assumed it was a Stilo gadget doing something

It actually sounds like a bad earth (the noise that is). I'd hope it had nothing to do with the needles moving. I always thought it was to do with the LCD screen, seeing as its always lit to some degree! Like if you put an indiglo watch to your ear and press the light button (why you would i have no idea? ) But you hear it hissing.

i noticed that too on my abarth. Are you sure that the cpu actually has a fan on it ? I dont think this is some 4ghz thingy , shouldnt passive cooling be sufficient
anyway the noise is a bit annoying and it keeps going even if you "turn off" the nav. which just puts it in standby
