I managed to get my hands on a 5 door 2002 Stilo JTD at almost scrap value as she has a few problems. She's still MOT'd till May next year so I thought I'd have a go at repairing her.

Picked her up this morning and just had a quick look over her.

Problems I've found so far:

1. Lights permanently on:
Rear left brake light.
Rear left fog light.
Rear right indicator.
Front left indicator.

Suspect its Body computer related, bad earth perhaps?

2. Engine stops when warm plus loose connection warning.

Suspect crank(RPM) sensor?

3. Loud ticking sound from engine.

Suspect one of the injectors, may need replacing.

4. Engine runs a little rough.

Suspect crank(RPM) sensor and injector are causing it, hope replacing them will cure it.

5. Preheat fault.

Haven't got a clue what this could be but I'll get FES connected to it over the next few days and see what shows up.

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

1. Sounds like earth problem.
2. Agree
3. Check front crank pulley, common fault lots of threads covering this.
4. Poss. Egr. Common fault blank it off to check, cost nothing.
5. Dead glow plug.
Good Luck with your project.

good luck sounds as if you have got your work cut out but it looks orright in the pic

Apart from the faults of listed she's in great condition.

I think problem 1(Lights permanently on) is goint to be the most difficult to solve. I'm hoping Deck's will point me in the right direction.

5. Dead glow plug.

Agreed.
Found this guide by Argo, will give it a try tomorrow.

Had a dead Glow plug on mine seemed a real pain to do, it didn’t affect the starting or running so I left it and put up with the light.

She runs fine, if a little lumpy at times. But as cris1117 has already said it could be the EGR. I'll be checking it all out over the next few days.

Appreciate the input guys, lets see if we can save her from the scrap man. (y)

Nice 1

Number 1 does seem like the tricky 1 hopefully its just bad earth or some weird wiring. If not can you change the BC?

I managed to get my hands on a 5 door 2002 Stilo JTD at almost scrap value as she has a few problems.

I'll give you 300£ for it :p :Offtopic: What tires fo you wear on these blades, they seem higher than 45 ? I bought the same rims a couple of weeks ago, but I am really worried that there won't be much rubber on them and they'll bend in the first pothole :(

The standard Stilo tires are 195x65xR15. 55 is for 16'' rims and 45 is for the 17''. The standard tires give you the most comfortable ride, although it doesn't feel very safe when cornering at high speeds. It's really really cheap. Heck, I paid 1 and a half times of what you paid for the car only for my tires. :)

I need to move to the UK..

you forgot the other major problem it has. Its a 5 door so therefore is fugly. Not fugly in an multipla way but nearly as.

3 doors a crap if you have a family that needs transport.

She'll be up forsale once(if) I've cured her faults, but for more than £300. ;)

I've got Goodyear F1 Eagles(GSD3) 225-45-17's on her with 34psi in the front and 32 in the back usually but it depends on the load I'm carrying. No problems yet with pot holes and the roads around here are an absolute nightmare, pot holes everywhere.

JTD 8v engine has shim adjustable tappets. Could aslo explain the engine running rough.

Thanks Dave, I'll get them checked. It seems to only be coming from the end near the cambelt. I'll get the covers off later and have a better look(listen).

i thought thats what your MW is for. The family stuff. It just seems to me that the 5 door was the one that was designed after the 3 dr and MW when the budget had run out so they used the designers kids to sketch it.

I had a 5 door before the Multiwagon, agreed she wasn't as good looking as the 3 door, kids may well have designed her but she was a brilliant family car. We put almost 50,000 miles on her and she behaved pefectly for all 50,000 of them.

so from that we can conclude that the uglier the car the better family vehicle it is, 5 dr stilo, mulipla mk2, multipla mk 1, ssang yoong fugly mobile...............

Glad its just me and the missus:)

Seriously tho fair play in doing what you are and repairing it to sell to someone who can get a lot of use from it. Not seen pics but if body is good then the faults can be repaired. If not it still has a good value as parts. Engine alone a few hundred.

5-door practicality over looks any day!!

Looks like a bargain shadey, however is the MW actually rated to tow that?

Practicality is the winner for me too.

The Multiwagon max towing capacity is 1300kg I think. I'm pretty sure the transporter and car totalled more than that. Wasn't the best towing experience I've had but it wasn't too bad once I started doing 55mph up the M1, cruise control engaged. (y)

Our family was 6 weeks away from being born when we purchased the 5 door. The booster seats built into the rear seats where brilliant and something we miss in the Multiwagon.

I've attached a few photo's Glen sent me before I fetched her.
