Hi, my key fob hasnt worked for over a year, i called Fiat and they wanted £85 for code then another £50 to program!! (hence why im still using the key).

A local place to me has not long opened - and they specialise in this type of thing plus diagnostic testing.

He told me that my fob is still active, but i need the Code Card from out of the manual that came with car (car is a 2002 which ive had for 4 years), ive checked right thru pack, and no code card!!

If i get this card, he will just charge me a tenner to sort :)

But how can i get this card?? Ive looked on other sites, and it says that main dealers keep these cards for insurance purposes?
I know that the card holds info for elect and mech?

Can someone help??

I've just had my key reprogrammed at Fiat. I was fed up with using the key. It cost £35 for the key card and £42 for the reprogramming. Plus the vat and it comes up to just over £90. There's a method of getting the key code for free but i've not tried it i was too lazy!

Code card is available as an immediate download for any dealer, £35 + vat

The dealer request's the info and receives it free of charge.

The dealer then charges what he likes for the service other
manufacturers dealers charge £10-£15 for the same service.
In future I suggest if you purchase a car from a dealer you
wait until the deal is about to be signed and add that you will
require the vehicles plip, mechanical key code, and any other
codes free of charge as part of the deal.

I think the frustrating thong, well for me personally, is the variety of charges I was quoted for the code. Nobody objects to anyone making a living but, £40 for a code seems excessive, especially if they receive it free. £20 and I wouldn't feel like I am being over and abused, without having been bought dinner for first!

If poss i would like to know too ..Fiat charged me £35 for my last stilo and a week later it got written off ..Regards Anne

The method is flawed. It relies on Government legislation that only applies to public bodies and companies owned by public bodies. Fiat, their dealer network and the company that holds security information on their behalf are neither.

Dealer does not get it free of charge , can i ask who told you that ?

So how much does it cost a dealer then?

What must be considered is that when you purchase a vehicle
you are also become authorised by ownership to the Information
ie key codes held for your vehicle it's of no use to anyone else
other than the vehicle owner. Authorised by Ownership.

Even the letter registering the vehicle for the first time
states ACCESS TO YOUR VEHICLES SECURITY DATA
The ISR provides a secure means of maintaining information
such as key numbers radio codes and locking wheel nut numbers.
As a member of the IRS they can be made available to authorised
parties under strict security protocols.
When the vehicle is first sold Fiat pays for you details to be logged
that cost of which is built into the purchase price of the car.
To re obtain the codes garages fax the registration documents
to IRS and request the codes.

Nominal cost £15.00 to the customer from other dealers not Fiat.

Fiat Does not own the data it belongs to the owner of the car.
