Technical Stilo rear axle bushes.

I have a stilo 06 and i'm going to replace the rear axle bushes, any advice and how hard are they to do? Cheers

Hi and welcome,
There is loads of info on this one on here.
The reality is it can be painful, sorry honesty is always the best option !!
You are looking at around 5 hours if all goes to plan !!.
The bushes are very tight to say the least. When i did mine the hardest part was getting the old ones out, you have to cut them unless you have access to bespoke pressing gear. Anyway have a dig around and if you got any questions fire away, loads on here have done them and the collective knowledge is vast !! and we got the scars to prove it lol :D

Cheers for now

How do you know if they need doing. I have a knocking noise coming from the rear of the car but I'm thinking it sounds more like an exhaust bracket has come off.

Look at the bushes where the rear axle attaches to the floor of the car just forward of the rear wheels. You may see a small oil leak coming from the bush(es) or signs of where oil has been leaking and sprayed under the axle.

If there's no sign of oil, it doesn't mean the bushes are OK but you need to put a lever between the bush housings and axle mounting brackets to check for excessive play.

Hi. just sit in the back and get someone to drive it over a pothole.
If it’s the exhaust it will knock, if it’s a bush you will get a jar up your back.
The rear bush sensation is pretty much like driving with a completely dry shock absorber, you will feel it.
They seem to go at about 60-80,000 miles both my stilo’s had new bushes at around this mileage; the oldest one is on its 3rd set at 200,000 miles.
The other one I sold recently at 117,000 but was in need of the nearside bush replacing for the second time.
Slightly off topic but I was surprised at the amount of people that wanted to buy an 117,000 mile stilo jtd with a duff rear bush, it sold for full asking in two days.
But as we all know on here what a great, fun car.

Ah right ok. Now I'm confused. Cause I have a knocking sound from somewhere upfront. And when I go over potholes or bumps, its like I have NO shock absorber at all. :(

When the bushes went on my car the rear tyres started to wear on the inside and there was an annoying squeeky rubbing noise from the rear when turning, you can check easily by lifting the tyres off the ground and with a lever try lifting the pivot point it shouldn't lift up as they are designed to rotate also as mentioned there may be oil surrounding the area as the bushes are oil filled in 4 compartments.I did change them myself and took a good 6-8hrs, remember the whole rear axle has to come off the car as they can't be done on the car. The hardest part was taking the old ones out with an hacksaw and chisel then getting the new ones in I used some althread and a large lump hammer not for the faint hearted, really is a 2 person job but did manage on my own. Also remember many dealers will only sell the complete axle as they don't want the hassle remember dealer labour charges. although the bushes are readily available for about £35-45 which is a lot cheaper than a new axle,

What do dealers charge for the complrete axle?

Well if they're on the ball and have the right equipment then they can replace them in situ in 2min 36sec by the looks of it:)

Should be really cheap then to have them done at the dealers

Last time I checked it was about £750.

Not sure I'd like my bushes fitted that way.

Thats an awful lot of heat being transfered into the oil filled rubber bushes. The axle was glowing Orange for a few seconds, that means it was over 1000 degree's C ... :nono:

Edit.
It was more like 1100 degree's C ...

Doesn’t really matter what the emitter is…stainless steel, cast iron, tungsten in your light bulb, the temps are about the same for a given color. Generally accepted colors/temps are:
C F Color
400 752 Red heat, visible in the dark
474 885 Red heat, visible in the twilight
525 975 Red heat, visible in the daylight
581 1077 Red heat, visible in the sunlight
700 1292 Dark red
800 1472 Dull cherry-red
900 1652 Cherry-red
1000 1832 Bright cherry-red
1100 2012 Orange-red

C= Centigrade
F= Farenheit

I agree, I wouldn't like to be anywhere near those exploding pockets of boiling oil either. Removing the bushes doesn't seem to be a big problem anyway

I like the speed they go in though:)

Just had my rear bushes done 126 all in for both side well happy after reading how hard it looks to do had the stilo 9 months I've done both front springs wish bones drop links door strap replaced a window disc and pads oh I do like fiats
