The problem is the boot won't open using the grab rail switch, but I have tested the switch with a multimeter and it is working as it should.

I have also checked and tested all the other micro-switches in the tailgate (that I know of) - 2 in the locking mechanism, 1 in the locking mechanism for the glass section and the 1 in the grab rail. They all work on and off as they should.

The boot will open using the button on the key though, so the servo for the locking mechanism has got power to it.

Prior to the grab rail switch not opening it at all, the boot kept opening itself intermittently (the servo activating) and sometimes I managed to get sat in the car ready to go off and then when I turned the key to the first position MAR the tailgate servo would activate and I'd have to get out and close the boot and sometimes it did the same but only when I turned the key to start the car.

Cheers People :D

Many thanks Davren, I will check that out tomorrow if the weather is decent. Since nothing else has or is going wrong with the car, I'm going to take a wild stab that it is just the earth for the opening of the tailgate.

Is the earthing point a simple stud attached to the body and then wires with ring terminals bolted down? or is it like the one in the engine bay near the battery box - a large multi-block connector? If it is the multi-block would you happen to know which pin number/numbers are responsible for the tailgate switch? Just so I'm not hunting for ages with a multimeter ;) lol.

P.S. I owe you a "thanks" for your help on how to get to the horn, i will try and sort this out tomorrow as well :worship: Cheers.

Yeah... it's the same type as the one near the battery. Bottom right in this picture. On the MW you go in through the left side panel then the bottom of the storage recess lifts up.

Wiring diagram is no very clear. but the tailgate handle switch should be a Black/Purple wire on pin 7 or 21 of the black earth connector.

OK, time for an update. I have checked the multi-block earth point C30 and it had a good connection to the body and I tested the earths for all of the micro-switches on the tailgate and they all had a good circuit.

Things have improved somewhat even though the connections were OK before. Now I can open the tailgate whenever I like (y)

But when I turn they key to start the car, the tailgate servo gets a pulse of power or something and self activates, thus clicking open the tailgate before the engine has even fired up, then I've obviously got to get out and shut the tailgate down in order to commence my journey (n):bang:

Any further thoughts please :worship:

Hi,

Mine went through a phase of doing that, never did get to the borrom of it.
I can only open my boot via the key fob (big and little boot!!).
I did change the microswitches on the upper glass tailgate but that didnt work so gave uo investigating further.

Cheers for now

The boot and back window catches are operated by a +ve pulse from the Body Computer. I can't see anything on the wiring diagram where a spurious pulse could come from. It seems as though a voltage spike is being created when you start the engine but I can't see where that could be coming from either.

Sorry, I can't think of anything else to suggest.

It could still be a loose connection somewhere and it is the vibration of the car starting that sets the tailgate off, are there any other connection blocks somewhere for the power supply to the tailgate? Could it be a sticky relay, does the tailgate have an old style relay or is it the body computer that acts as the relay?

Deckchair are you out there, you are clearly the electrical guru on here. Have you any thoughts? :worship:

I really could do with someones help on this while I've still got the car in pieces. Does anyone have any thoughts??

Hello Mr. Nutter,

I know some time has passed since your post.... but I have the same problem with my wifes 04 Stilo Estate and am wondering if you found a solution that you are prepared to share?

Well the boot opening on its own fixed itself, unless I fixed it without realizing while I was working on something else.

And I did fix the grab rail switch not working by removing it from the grab rail and cleaning out the switch with electrical contact spray. However it's back to it's same old tricks now, so I think I should have just snipped the old micro-switch and soldered a new one in its place.

Hope this helps.

Ta, thanks for that, I will get a new switch and hope for the best.

Thread resurrection!
I have a 2003 JTD MW, cannot find this C30, have lifted the bottom flap on left side Nothing? Do they all have them ? My problem is no power to the micro switch, power at fues by steering wheel thou:confused:gh?
