My Stilo drinks oil - which is another story.

Anyway - I am wondering is unipart 10W40 motor oil ok for the 1.6 engine before I start using it as it is very reasonably priced.

The oil states it is suitable for petrol and diesel engines and meets or exceeds API SL/CF ACEA A3/B3/B4 VW 500 00 VW505 00.

The stilo manual states to use oil that pass ACEA A3-96, CCMC G5 and API SJ.

So my question is does this oil suit the requirment outlined in the guide and should I use it?

The reason i don't use Castrol etc is because I have to top up 1 litre or so a month (800 miles) and got peed of with paying the price for top branded oil.

the car has done 90,000 BTW

Not sure about it but comma oil is supposed to be good and its reasonably priced.

If it's 10w40 its working on the petrol stilo. My father has a leak on some gasket he wanted to get fixed and didn't have time. He's been using some romanian oil for the past 2 years, never had a problem. :)

What year is yours? My book says Selenia K which is API SM 5W40.. fully synthetic.. or just synthetic, not sure. Doesn't drink even a bit, doesnt drink a bit of any oil in fact :D (touching wood) sorry to brag bout it :D There is something wrong with your engine.. pretty low mileage..

5w40 is used in diesel engines if I'm not mistaking. :)
Well no, the Selenia site says Selenia K for Stilo 1.6. Every gasoline powered car can use 5W40 unless it's burning it. I've used 5W40 for almost 3 years and 70000km. The first oil I put in was Bizzol 5W40 or something like that, then two times I used Selenia 20K and since then I use whether Selenia K or Selenia K Pure Energy. Never drank even I tiny bit, I drain out exactly what I've put in. Oh and once I made the big mistake of puting some Castrol Magnatec 5W40 C3 and it came out black and thin as coffee and wouldn't mix with the old oils my mechanic had in a container... and I drive on LPG...

The best oil in the world wont help if your engine is already worn.

I'd use the cheapest 5w-40 available during winter if I was you.

The Unipart 10W-40 should be fine in summer though.

Hi Argo,

Why 5w40 only in the winter - I don't really understand the numbers so whats the difference from 10w40?

Also why 5w40 if the book says 10w40?

Thanks again

The 5W part means the oil is thin when very cold so you don't get hardly any wear at say sub zero temperatures.

10W is not quite so thin but would still be good in summer when the engine starts a lot warmer.

Quite honestly, I expect 10W-40 would be OK anyway but it sounds like you've previously used good quality oil so maybe not a good idea to give the engine too big a shock (say if you've been using 5W-40 before)

Your engine may be worn but it can easily get worn a lot more if you throw really cheap stuff at it.

Selenia K SAE 5W-40
Just to advise that the OH spec for my GP was Selenia K SAE 5W-40 (FIAT 9.55535-M2/BZ API SM, ACEA A3/B3, MB 229.3, VW 502.00 & 505.00) - & I used Unipart Premium Synthetic SAE 5W-40 & discovered it was re-badged Fuchs TITAN Supersyn SAE 5W-40 (FIAT 9.55535-H2/M2/N2/Z2, API SM/CF, ACEA A3/B4, BMW Longlife 98, MB 229.3, Porsche, VW 502.00 & 505.00).
