Hello

I have a Stilo 1.4L petrol version, 2004 registration. It has run around 41000.
My garage tells me that I need to replace it.

Will I be risking it, if I hold on till 50000? I bought the car second hand and I do around 5500 miles per year.

What else is worth changing along with the cambelt? I read about changing pulleys and water pump. Do they apply to Stilo as well?

Much appreciate your inputs.
 
i got my cambelt changed recently at 53,000 its advised every 5 years/60,000 Miles to change the cambelt. I recommend changing the water pump, Aux Belt also and yer you could wait untill 50,000 easily but if he says it needs replacing now and you trust him then do it. How much has the garage quoted by the way ?
 
My 2004 1.2 had done 32,000 miles when the garage changed the belt in april. They called me back to show me the tensioner and leaking water pump. Looked like it was close to disaster.

You should never run the risk with cambelts. Mine was a couple hundred quid all in including a new waterpump, antifreeze etc.
 
it's not just mileage of the belt the fact that your car is a 2004 the belts pretty old and probably due for a change. you could have a 2004 with 5000 miles on it and it should still have been changed by now.

I believe the water pump is recommended to be changed at the same time because the cambelt needs to come out to gain access to the water pump

Why do you guys change the water pump every 30/40 or so thousand miles :confused: The book says that you change the belt every 100 000 km, if i recall correctly but says nothing about the water pump. I've never heard of changing the water pump with the timing belt :confused: What's wrong with the pump?
 
i got mine done last week at 59,000 (1.6) along with a service, cost me £310 and the car runs so much better !
 
its preventative maintenance....if the water pump were to break, (given that it is run off of the cam belt) then it would put the timing out (obv depending on how it breaks), this would kill your engine...simple logic, guarding against quite a small risk factor, but with devistating consequenses.....

I've got a 24 year old Renault 21, which has done 500 000 km and never changed the water pump... don't plan on changing it on the Stilo too, unless it leaks or breaks...

your choice....but id say a bad one. likewise dads got a 16 year old toyota, had one belt at 40000miles...now on 170000miles, no problems so far...but both cars are worth sweet FA so not worth the expense...

i cant remember if its the 1.6 or the 1.4 but one of them runs the pump off an aux belt....in that case itll be ok to leave it till it breaks.

Dont worry... Its your choice.
The water pump is driven by the cambelt, as said before, IF the water-pump bearings fail it would be catastrophic for the engine... PLUS the cambelt has to be disturbed to change the water-pump, and a belt should always be changed if disturbed... so it makes PERFECT SENSE to replace the water-pump, the guide pulleys & tensioner along with the belt every time... the water-pump for my car was a quality brand (Quinton Hazel) & I only paid £30 for it, so stupid NOT to change it IMO.

Couldn't agree more, it's entirely your choise. I was just saying that the car manual didn't say anything about changing the water pump. I know tons of people who drive 10 - 15 year old fiats (Bravo/Bravo) and have never changed the water pump or had problems with it. That sounds to me like let's change the oil pump as a preventative measure cause if it breaks the damage to the engine would be catastrophic.

The oil pump is well lubricated :rolleyes: unlike the water pump bearings.

Plus when the Owners manuals were written early water-pump bearing failure wasnt "anticipated", experience & time proved otherwise.

Then there is the question about who pays for the repair once your Warranty is expired?

You do... NOT the manufacturers... even if they were a little over enthusiastic about cambelt replacement & the consequences of it being done "on a budget"

But its STILL your choice...

Wow, are there really some cases of water pump failure on this forum? I followed the bulgarian forum and there isn't a single thread about water pump failure there.. really don't know.. just speaking from my own experience. hey, we'll find soon enough who's right. My 1.6 has 120 000km on the clock, have never changed the water pump and I am driving 30000km per year, let's see how long it is going to last.. will talk to you next year at 150000 ;)
