Howdy folks,
Ive been lurking here looking at guides etc byt never really posted.

Ive checked alot of other posts for power loss from the JTD engines but nothing matches up.

I had driven to the back of beyonds in Donegal for a weekend break and no issues.

I went to leave at 9am on a sunday morning and everything was fine.
I drove half a mile up the lane from where I was staying and stopped at the junction.
When i went to pull away it was as if i was trying to pull away in 3rd. Power was non existant!
Rolled back, took it out of gear, made sure it was in first and still nothing different.

The car creeped forwards and with the pedal to the metal nothing happened except a billow of blueish/grey smoke (not thick).

Nothing that i can see wrong, and no warning light.
Parked the car back at the house (long tootle - car wouldnt rev above 1300rpm or so) and it was easier to not use the throttle at all and gear shift up....

Now the car is back with my mechanic (long drive and begging a car trailer).

Nothing is showing up on the diagnostic!!!!!

Immediate thoughts are check MAF and gas return....

But why is nothing registering on teh diagnostic?????
Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Hi & welcome, when the EGR was blocking / blocked on my car I had no power under 2,000 rpm then wham! In it came... that threw up no EML at all... eventually it did though... A new EGR fixed it & the EML was gone, all power returned from 1,200 rpm.

I have no power at all.... :S
Not liking the sound of a turbo failure!

Sounds expensive.
Thanks tho!

Would a turbo failure not throw up an error? or an engine light?

Turbo failure is a pain, quick squint on ebay may yield a suitable turbo for £350-ish quid from stoneacre (if memory serves ;) ). Not sure how much an exchange job would be.....

Chances are no error message would come up.

If disconnecting MAF has yielded no joy then dead turbo is a reasonable suggestion - sadly :(

Thanks Guys - Ill speak to the mechanic at lunch.
Is there any other option on the turbo than the std barrett?

110 hp Multipla uses the same turbo, but Garrett is the only make available.

You have to remove front of car (bumper, radiators & headlights) to change it so ther is a bit od work involved.

Make sure you tell the mechanic to clean the oil out of the intercooler after changing the turbo or the engine could be destroyed next time you drive it if the intercooler is left full of oil that then gets sucked into the cylinders.

This may or may not be the same. You have to check the garett part number to be sure.

You might be able to get a refurbed 1 or get someone to refurb yours. I don't know where tho sorry.

Useful little note that!!!
Im sure hell know :D
I did just get a txt from him when i couldnt catch him on the phone...

"keep your knickers on" - and that was his exact words LOL

Id just rather know whats wrong... :S

If i had my motorbike on the road it wouldnt be so much of an issue....

No it means the EGR is foobarred like I said originally, stick a new one on... (y)

Ill start saving for a new one then Ffoxy!
Thanks again :D

Is there anyway to make them not clog up and die? (or are there better ones than others?)

By "byepass" I guess it was blanked off. Just leave it blanked and it will never give you any further trouble!

Errrm... No! Ignoring the emissions that the EGR is there to reduce, the incoming charge gets cooled by the flow from the EGR, so there is a risk of cooking the lump... of course you may want to just leave it blanked off it is your car... £99-ish for a new one from a Vauxhall dealer, part number B1055215032 if I recall, from Fiat its part number 55215032 lol!
Much cheaper than a Fiat version & both the same items, plenty info in this Forum about a DIY job on the EGR... Just awkward, not hard to do, & see what you can find out in here about "swirl gaskets" which can be fitted when the EGR is replaced, part number 71751468 (£12) &
55191883 (£3), they are supposed to prevent it happening again...

I have blocked my EGR and no issue with it anymore. Some services were advised me to do that. If I bought a new one, for some period I would have a problem with it again.

See post #15

Blocking the EGR is a great diagnostic check but it's NOT a solution.

Engine will run better with functioning EGR (especially if you fit the modified gasket)

Wrt to post 15 - The EGR as the name suggests ( Exhaust Gas Recirculator ) does NOT cool the incoming air to the inlet manifold. It is allowing all the crap from the hot exhaust to go into the inlet manifold THAT is why the valve gets clogged.

If you have run a JTD without the EGR in circuit, as I have for some time, you will notice that the engine is smoother in function it smokes less and that the MPG is improved especially in winter.

The benefits of having an EGR valve are moot and there are arguments for and against for a number of reasons.
