Hi to all,
I had a very unpleasant experience a couple of hours ago. I was maneuvering in a yard to get the car out and i turned the steering wheel fully to the right. Suddenly the steering wheel a kind of jumped and got really easy to turn for a second, followed immediately by the “Power steering failure” message and the steering light on the dashboard. Afterwards i totally lost the power steering and was the steering wheel got almost impossible to turn. I checked the fuse for the power steering, but it is OK. I also connected my OBD reader, but there was no fault related to the power steering, that could give me some leads. Can you please tell me what can i do, since i’m not able to move the car. What else can i check or i should deliver the car directly to a shop?

Do you mean the alternator belt?
I read several ideas regarding the power steering, but neither seams to be related to what i did and how the steering wheel responded - i mean the getting really easy to turn part.
I'll check the battery and voltage coming from the alternator, but i didn't have any battery related problems by now.
another thing comes to my mind - i turned the wheel a little bit harder when this happen - could i've broken something or "overloaded" the electronics of the steering column?

erm... no belt. has electronic power steering... (motor attached to column)

Unless the battery light came on too... then maybe a failure on the alternator.

best bet is to "reset" the car by disconnecting the battery for about 30min. are you using a generic code reader or "FiatECUscan" ?

worst case scenario, new EPS unit. see: http://www.bba-reman.com/catalogue/DetailedProduct.aspx?DetailedProduct=917
bit steep at £250 exchange.

I'll try everything i can tomorrow, but i fear that the worst case scenario will be even worse in my case - i'm from Bulgaria and it's not that easy to get replacement parts for Stilos here, except for original parts from Fat dealers...

what steering has a belt anyway:confused:

Errm Mitsubishi for one ;)..and do i love the system..cant beat hudraulic it just goes on and on..

EPS is the biggest load of tosh I have ever come up against..:yuck:

Mrs.PNL drives a Panda and I constantly worry about her safety cos its a more common fault on that car..:(

Ask the bulgarian colleagues here: http://forum.fiat-bg.org/ I think your problem has something to do with some relays that have probably burned out. There is a topic in the Bulgarian forum, try searching there a bit.

Neonglow, thanks, i'll look there too.

I was able to take the car to one of the two biggest fiat dealers here and after checking thy confirmed, that the steering column's gone and need to be changed. They'll try to resurrect it tomorrow, but if they can't, i'll have to either find a used one, or pay the solid amount of 800EUR for a new one. No way i'm paying so much for a steering column! i just looked at Ebay and saw one for 70GBP - part number is 00046826724. After googling this number i came across this ad for stilo parts - it looks exactly like mine.

Can somebody confirm that this part number will fit my car? I'll ask the garage tomorrow too, but i'd like to collect as much info as i can.

according to ePER, the right part no for the EPS Shaft is either
71735492 or 71735493 (y) but this is the updated part no, it seems that 00046826724 was an old number for the same part. hopefully someone else can confirm.
