JTD on startup - key won't turn.

Hi all,
Just a quickie - this has happened to my car ever since new in September 04.

Turn key to ignition position - car does all checks, then when I try to turn the key to start the engine it won't turn. Instead I have to turn it back off, then all the way round to start in one go.

It's almost like it's supposed to be that way. Bit of a bind when the only way to start from cold is straight round to "go" without letting the plug heaters do their thing (if such things still exist on a modern diesel).

Anyone get this?

cheers

Morgan

Re: JTD on startup - key won't turn.

Mine does that as well. But only if I turn it slightly more than the ignition/coil lights. Otherwise I have to turn it of like you said and turn it all the way again. Its a right arse if you stall it (I only do this when i swtich from the pool car to mine ) Just thought it was the way the car was designed.

mine does it too, if i turn the key to the point the lights all come on, then the extra notch to turn the engine over (and say i dont turn it for long and it doesn't start), i have to take the key out and do this process all over again. think its a design issue maybe?

Just went out and tried mine,

Mine will start either way, a full turn,

It also starts after I've let it run the checks and screen gives the OK then turn.

Re: JTD on startup - key won't turn.

ive only had this happen when youve turned the car off and restart without going to the take key out position. But thats something thats always happened on every fiat we've had except the brava (which its ignition setup is different to others in the past)

Ditto what scorg said!

Either you're not doing it quite right, or its got a fault.

Re: JTD on startup - key won't turn.

Hmm, so it looks like it may be a design thing. I'm not sure it was designed to be this way, more that it just happens as a result of the design. Pah...
Vimto2000 - perhaps you have a point in that I might be turning the key a fraction past 'boot up'.

Does going from cold on a morning straight round to ignition without the coil position potentially do the engine any harm?

Incidentally - along with my new avatar - I got a bullet camera today for my new in car black box project.
Call me paranoid but pity the next damn foo' who puts a foot wrong in front of my car :-) I'll have video evidence of every journey!

Talking Re: JTD on startup - key won't turn.

It is designed this way so when the cars started and running, you cannot try and crank it again. E.g get out of car for something jump in, forget its running and try and crank it over again, stops damage to starter and ring gear.

Perhaps
Noticed a distinct increase in the number of people driving with such arrogance and impunity that defies belief and in some cases costs lives.
And yes... some personal experience too which I don't seem to be able to let go too readily. No one hurt but my bank balance to the tune of a couple of k. The other driver got nothing. No fine despite dangerous driving, uninsured and then allegedly twoc on top.

Re: JTD on startup - key won't turn.

That happened to my dad a few years ago...git him from behind. He stopped, looked at the damage and drove of telling my dad to F*** himself. Told the police, and they couldn't do jack as he was an immigrant with no licence, no insurance. Didn't even have the car registered to him!

Re: JTD on startup - key won't turn.

it probably happens because u are turning the just that little bit too much, therfore have to go back to square 1. No i do not think it is a fault. As soon as the lights come on, just wait then turn fully. hope it helps.
