My Stilio 1.9JTD 02 Wont Start Without Spraying "Engine Start", In the air Intake. I have to do this every-time.

It will only start by unscrewing and spraying a small dose of engine start in intake, and straight away it will start.

I have rencently changed all 4 glowplugs, a new map sensor, and fuel pressure switch on the rail.

Im considering replacing the air flow sensor near the filter, but dont want to keep throwing money away. I reakon it could be this sensor as i have "engine fault light" and then the turbo cuts out sometime, but would this affect the starting?

Can anyone help

Thanks, Craig.

Hi,
does this do it all the time even when from "cold"?
I had this happen on my brava jtd and after scouring the internet i came across a forum (cant remember now it was 3 years ago) but it advised to change the crankshaft sensor, cured it ! basically on the brava if the crankshaft sensor doesnt sense the crank turning it wont let the fuel flow, with squirting easy start in you are tricking it to start. i,m not sure if it is the same on the stilo as i,m still getting into my stilo !!
Worth a try and will probably set you back about 25 quid. Bit awkward to change but not impossible.

good luck

Cheers

It wont start in either hot or cold condtitions, i could park it up and return in 10 mins from the shops and have to go through the whole process with the Spray again

This sounds like a good option, so the air flow sensor wont have notting to do with staring the engine at all?

Cheers for the help

If this is the problem (crank sensor) could this cause the turbo to cut out and "engine fault light to appear. Or would that be the airflow sensor

Hi,
No that would probably be the overboost valve playing up. You really need to get a laptop plugged in and get some fault codes off the ecu. As the engine light has come on they will be stored, if the overboost valve is playing up you usually get a P0235 or P0236 code stored.

Hope that helps

Were is thi Overboost valve Loacated too, or what it looks like?

Thanks again Craig

Great thanks for the info, one last question do you know of a online shop that would sell a new valve?

Cook thats all for now thanks, ile check the whole thing over tommorrow.

Cheers for the help ile post my finds (y)

Using easy start or engine start spray is a funny game, the car gets addicted to it and if you use it too much it will always needs its dose to start. It sounds like you have already got to the point of no return.

If the crank sensor fix does not work then I would suggest stocking up on easy start lol or get a new car =P

Hello everyone

Just fitted a new crank sensor today, but still no luck, £30 wasted:(

Can anyone can think what else might be the problem?

The car will run fine once the car is started, notting seems out of place, such as no stalling or shaking. It just wont start unless I spray "engine start" in the intake, then it starts straight away.

Its very weird, the only messages i get up are EBD Fail, and ASR fail, if i try to start it normal way without spray.

I did yeah error message does not appear now, one plug was faulty.

Will a fiat dealer be able to find the error codes and tell me exactly whats wrong, because ive been been told to change so many parts not by them, by the AA Computer, and a garages, but these parts i brought didnt make a difference.

Also do you know the thread for error codes? Also any idea what EBD Fail, and ASR fail mean?

Thanks, Craig.

The thing with error codes is that whilst they're one hell of lot better than guessing they can still be interpreted wrong.

EBD and ASR errors, when you start the car, for example for often due to a weak battery or poor earths somewhere.

You can also get ASR errors if you've got the wrong size tyres fitted but this would only happen once the car was moving.

If you don't want to do it yourself then I'd get the error codes read by a proper Fiat specialist garage who hopefully have plenty of experience with the Stilo (y)

I think I reakon what it is

I believe the glow plugs are not heating up enough.
I also believe the last owner didnt wait till the preheat light goes off before starting, could that cause damage?

Does anyone know what the unit looks like that controls the temperature of all the plugs, and how to run a test myself to see if thats the fault?
I do have a multimeter......

The on-board checking system does a pretty good job of checking the heater plugs although it only really tests as far as the heater relay module i.e. it can't work out if an individual plug is defective.

I notice you say you've changed all 4 plugs and I'm wondering if there's any chance you may have fitted the wrong ones (say 24v instead of 12v) which may possibly fool the test routine into thinking they are really OK. Of course you should have noticed starting problems straight away if you had.

I'd check for 12v on the metal stud visible on the relay module but don't short to the chassis (easily done) or you'll blow the 50A supply fuse.
