Hi guys i purchased my stilo from a car auction :/ about 2 months ago. Everything worked fine until the day after when the engine just died on me and wouldnt restart for about 3 hours. Mangaed to get her going again and she drives lovelly but then at certain random times the engine just decides to totally die on me whilst driving or sometimes wont start at all at other times.

Sometimes i can go a week or two without any probs then all of a sudden it comes back and the engine dies or just wont start.

Engine repeatedly cut off every time i tried driving away last night so had to leave the car overnight and RAC came out this afternoon to get her going. She started fine and so rac man said hed follow me home to get the car on the drive. Engine died 300 meters or so up the road and so in the end rc towed me home.

He checked over bits for me but couldnt find an area for the problem but said its possible to replace the crank sensor but not guarenteed to solve the problem. Error codes taken today were:

: P0460 FUEL LEVEL SENSOR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION
: P0606 POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE PROCESSOR FAULT

The P0606 fault has never came up before but the other error code was present when i had a diagnostics check done when i first started having the problems. I cant see why this would stop the engine dead at times. Please can any one advise and also how easy is it to replace the crank sensor as i cant afford to put into a garage at present and have been told by euro carparts that the crank sensor part would cost me £27.32 + VAT

The stilo is a 51 plate model!

Please help

Regards

Mark

Have you ever checked the gap on a spark plug?

Well this is the same, you check the gap between the sensor and the serrated pick up ring on the crank pulley. If it's too big a gap then you adjust the sensor to be closer

i have about a 1 mm gap between the sensor and the round thing that spins around. I was also wondering what else i could use to clean the sensor as i dont have anything as such other than GT85 with PTFE. Its a lubricant, penetrator and water displacer product can this be used to spray on it??

You only need to clean the top flat surface with a cloth. It's not an optical type sensor so it doesn't really need any cleaning fluid but magnetic particles stuck on top aren't good.

About 1mm is a bit vague, that's about .040" and that's too large. About .020" is good. Use some feeler gauges to set it up properly

ok ive cleand that part and put back on the wheel and still wouldnt start but then it allowed me to drive around my area where i live for 5 mins ok. I will have to move the sensor a bit closer tommorow to the cog wheel thing but i dont have one of them feeler gauges is there anything i could use otherwise?? Appreciate ur help m8. Im probably gonna put the car back through the auction cause if im honest looking through what people have had similar problems have had to spend loads of money with no real proper results!

could the ecu be causing this problem as i read someones posting and when they replaced it it solved the problem for them??
