I have just paid £41 at my local Fiat dealer for a diagnostic check due to parking sensor failure message and warning symbol on the dash. They have told me I need to replace one sensor at a cost of £170, When I asked them to turn off this feature they told me they could not do that. I was told as they were fitted at the factory the body computer was set up for them and that if I want to remove this feature I would have to change the body computer. I would then have to buy a new strip insert for the rear bumper at a cost of £795 this was an estimate not the full final cost. Are they correct or just trying to get me to spend out on work, also when I picked the car up they had unplugged the parking sensor control box under the tail light so the mileage was constantly flashing. The car is booked in for next friday for the work to be carried out. The dealer in question is Westover Fiat Salisbury Wilts
Thanks

I'd get if fixed properly although £170 seems rather high to me (it's often only dirt on the sensor).

They're not really correct about changing the Body Computer, to get rid of the warning, as that wouldn't make any difference anyway. You'd need to change the whole car to one without parking sensors :p

You can bodge it with a bit of electronics but makes far more sense to fix it properly.

Thanks for the reply, I have already given the sensor a good clean but with no Joy. As for the cost I have no choice they are the nearest Fiat dealer to my home. I have tried to find a local independant Fiat specialist and there is no sign of one around Andover Hampshire. The Sensor from Fiat is £80 and the Sleeve is £10 plus the cost to reset the computer and fitting it, even though I have already paid £41 to diagnose. How often do these sensors fail as with four of them to be replaced thats £800. I love the car but dont like Fiat prices had a Volvo S40 Sport on a 51 plate which was cheaper on parts. Wife wanted a smaller car:cry:. Guess my pocket is going to be lighter on Friday then

The car would still have to go to Fiat to go on the Diagnostics to reset the warnings so that would be another £41 I take it.

That's what the dealer would do but most faults on Stilos auto reset after 3 good runs (obviously assuming the fault has gone).

Either way - is £40 really that much ?

Well I had the sensor replaced and now no faults showing, however not very happy with the dealer. They told me that they could not get the plastic bit that goes into the black plastic strip that the sensor sits inside and makes it look neat and flush in the strip on the bumper. So they have just glued the sensor in place with something that looks like a poxy resin type of glue, it looks a mess. Can anyone help me with either a part number for the plastic sleeve or where I can get one from. I can then take the car back and make them fit it properly. The dealer in question is Westover Fiat Salisbury Wilts they charged me £155 for this bodge job that I could have done myself and told me to buy some black sealant to tidy it up myself what a cheek.

Does it look like number 2 in the pic?

If it does, part number is 71718817 and is priced at around £7 :)
