1.8 petrol Stilo, I'm getting an intermitent Engine light
code P0340 Camshaft no signal. Sometimes if the car stalls
and I try to restart too quickley.
Also now and again when slowing down too 15 -25mph
then pulling away in a high gear. I'm hoping it's possibly
not the cam sensor as it's behind the exhaust cam wheel
cam belt off, cambelt was replaced 15000 miles ago after
cambelt snapped on previous owner. Headskimed at the time.
?? any alternative causes.

Well I have been having this fault for a few weeks
now and trying to avoid replacing the sensor like
the plague. Cancel the fault and within a day or so
it reappears ding ding ding ding - ding of death.

What a stupid place to put a sensor why not on the front
of the head so it just bolts on and off without having to remove
the cambelt and camshaft wheel whith all the associated problems
of engine timing.

Anyway I removed the plastic guards, auxilary belt and idler
and closely inspected the sensor and timing wheel, I'd disconnected
the battery so I connected it back up and the engine refused to fire.
No Car, No spare sensor, and defiately no cam lock kit.

I noticed that the notched metal insert in the Timing wheel was
really rusty so using a bit of emery cloth I started to remove the rust,
finaly using an ALDI dremel to wire brush it and covered it with a
smearing of grease.
I'd left the battery disconnected by now for over 30 mins so I reconnected
the battery and tried to start the engine. It fired into life !!!!!!!!!!!!
and ran, warmed it up phonic wheel relearn, throttle relearn,
and we will see if it's cured, at least it started at least it ran
and I may get to work on Monday.

If it works I may order in a camshaft sensor supposed to cost £52
and carry with the car.

I read up a little more about the fault it appears
that the cam sensor generates a magnetic field
betwen the two halves and the rotating cam
interupts the field and causes the pulses.

So cleaning the wheel should have had little
effect anyway. So I ended up last Monday
with P0340 and P0335 camshaft and crankshaft
intermitent errors. I cleared both and thought
I better get both sensors ordered and sorted.

Touch wood though since clearing both faults
it's been fine since - so totally bemused now
just glad I didn't put it into a fiat garage to
sort.
