It's usually the bottom coil that breaks, so it's often difficult to see.

Several people have posted on here that they didn't know they had a broken spring until they took the car for MOT, or a garage for other work.

Dave.

That sound familiar, mine went in for its MOT and failed for a broken NSF spring. I've not driven the car since before Christmas as its been in the garage as I use my van for work. Changed the broken spring yesterday and the bottom coil was completely missing

I decided to only change the one spring for now as the car will be going back in the garage once its passed it MOT

this i dont often wonder about.......

on one side the owner does not even notice the spring is broken, often for months

on the other side people are screaming compensation (stilo spring thread of days gone by for example) and how dangerous a broken spring is

Well the car's 6 years old, its only done 32,000 miles. Car problems are a problem directly related to owning a car

not sure what you are talking about(re-read my post).......................my point is how does someone not notice a broken spring yet others do.

I know what you meant and I said that I did not notice. On the point you made about people often wanting compensation, I stated that its the sort of problem I expect being a car owner - car related problems.

I also pointed out that although the car is 6 years old its done what I consider to be low millage for a car of its age.

The failure is caused by corrosion which is more closely linked to the age of the car than miles covered.

I think we suffer worst in the UK due to the specific salt/grit mixtures used on our roads (Many European countries use salt only)

Got mine from Partco @ £41.85 each, on box it says 1.9jtd front, so they must be same for wagon as on a hatch.

Front springs are different for hatchback and Multiwagons. They are also different for different engines and whether you have air conditioning.

Despite this, some after market suppliers including KYB, list the same spring for all models.

I suspect the MW springs a slightly longer and stiffer. The MW, in common with other estate cars, is designed as a 'part time van' after all.

When I bought my MW JTD 18 months ago, the front spoiler was always hitting speed bumps despite the previous owner having recently had new front springs fitted. From the receipts he gave me, they were KYB springs. I looked up the part number from the receipt in a KYB (Kyaba) catalogue and they listed the same spring for all JTDs and some of the petrols.

Fiat list different springs for JTD hatchbacks and MWs and for with or without A/C. I changed my 'new' KYB springs for Fiat ones which raised the front of the car off the speed bumps.

I've no idea what the K, P and L means, what manufacturer are they?

Original Fiat springs have grading marks on them even for the same part numbers. It's 2 coloured paint marks on each spring. When replacing them you need to have 2 springs with the same colours.

It was a company in Leicester called Victoria Auto Parts .

What an incredibly slow and complicated website they have. :(

I couldn't find any reference to K, P and L on there, just 2 different part numbers for JTD MW 115bhp front springs.

Don't think I'd trust them anyway, they list springs for 1.2 and 1.4 MWs that don't exist. MWs only had the 1.6, 1.8 or 1.9 engines.
