Hi Guys

Need your help - My wife's Fiat Stilo 19 Multijet has just started overheating. She rang me when the warning light came on and the temp guage shot up into the red. She got the car home and I checked the fluid level and that was fine - it was also pressurised ok. There is no hot air coming from the heater so am wondering if it is the thermostat. I have also checked to see if there is any water in the oil and I can't see any.
Any advice would be welcome as she needs the car for work.
Thanks
Steve

Thanks for that - haven't got a meter and don't like soldering wires onto things though - is there another way of telling if the fan is working ok? - need to get the car sorted tomorrow but as usual money is tight due to christmas....

turn car on, let it warm up, open bonnet and the fan should kick in when it gets between half and three quarters on the temp guage.

to check if the thermostat is working, run the car till its half way on the temp guage and check if the coolant pipes heat up if not its buggered

simple and cheap :)

Thanks for that - will try it in the morning. Any idea's on the air-con? Will that be linked to the overheating as it will only blow cold..

Air-con ? NO

heater blower YES the coolant in the engine is used to heat the cabin air if selected to hot, but I'm not sure if it's part of the small circuit ( before thermostat) or after ? probably in the small one if this is so you should still get hot air from the blowers as the engine warms up

what engine and year is it?

Karl

Hi Karl
It's one of the last Stilo Multiwagons with the revised grill - 56 plate and it's got the 1.9 Multijet dsl engine - haven't tried it on just normal blower - but no matter what temp I set on climate control - just getting cold air through.
Thanks
Steve

Just been looking at other posts - how would i check to see if the water pump is working correctly?

give it a go using the normal heater system first then we will move onto the more expensive stuff, dont need any heart attacks this close to christmass (n)

Sounds like a physical coolant flow problem (rather than an electrical problem)

Coolant flows directly from the engine through the heater circuit if heat is selected- when that gets hot enough to open the engine thermostat excess hot coolant then is allowed to flow through the front radiator for cooling

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/cooling-system2.htm

The fact you are recieving no heat in the cabin means a flow problem eg air lock, water pump failed (or blockage)

air locks - feel the flow and return rubber pipes going in and out of the cabin to the heater - both cold or one hot the other stone cold? no flow- water pump or air lock or blockage

water pump - tank should be pressurised when you release cap and if you look in the header tank reservoir- with engine up to temp hot coolant should be flowing/ returning back to reservoir

engine overheating- radiator fan should be kicking in and taking care of that- if it isn't points to flow problem again- air lock

just a quick look at the car - only had time to run the engine up to halfway on the temp gauge. The top pipe ( I think ) on the radiator was hot but the bottom one (???) and the pipe going to the coolant tank ( the one with the fill line on it ) was cold.
Does this throw any light on things?

It is normal, the top pipe is from the thermostat, this is the hot one coming from the engine to be cooled by the radiator, so the bottom pipe which is going out from the radiator must be cool/cold.

have just driven the car for 20 minutes and everything appeared normal. Checked hoses and they appeared ok. Pressure in the expansion tank ok, fluid bubbled out when the cap was taken off. Heater blowing out hot air!!
Then drove the car back home, temp guage shot up to 3/4 then jumped to red hot!!! cold air came through the heater, stopped the car and the guage went back to normal on restarting after 5 mins - stayed at normal then went to 3/4 then back to half, then to hot again. Stopped the car, waited a couple of minutes, then it was fine all the way back home ( another 10 mins ).
When the temp gauge was at hot, both pipes from and to the radiator were hot!
Any idea's?

Anybody got any idea's on how much a cambelt change on a Fiat Stilo 1.9 Multijet should be?

Take the small pipe off of the top of the coolant bottle and told it up so coolant does not run out. Then start the engine if no coolant is pumped out of it then it is the water pump

Thanks for that

The water pump was at fault - it was working but not efficiently - have now had it sorted at Westfield Motors in Wyke - £270 including new timing belt, tensioners etc.... Car working fine now -
Great service from the garage.... highly recommend them

Something similar is happening to me I think... Also multijet 150...

Today, suddenly, when driving uphill on the motorway, the temp gauge creeps up to the first notch to the right from the top.

Yesterday everything was OK and this morning it's overheating.

Can the water pump go bad so quickly? I'll check everything mentioned in this thread of course

let it get hot , up to temperature, and have a feel of the radiator pipes I don't think the thermostats usually fail shut but worth checking.
also the radiator fans ? did they come on when it was hot ?
I have a steep hill just before home and even though my temp gauge shows middle im sure sometimes my rad fan is on maybe slow speed 1 to keep it there ?
I think there are 2 speeds , and you can make switch on with fes/mes I think.
also worth checking that first.
