Drove back from meeting up with with a friend tonight and the mirrors were all dewed over.

Its ok I though, perfect opportunity to show off the heated door mirrors (we'd been talking about them).

Hit the rear screen heater button (this is how they are opperated is it not )

Drivers door mirror heated up and cleared, but passenger sides didn't. I've never used this function before (and never knew how effective it was :D), so don't know if its normal for just the drivers side to work?

If no (which I'm in two minds about, because if its only been designed for one then I'd assume it'd be the drivers side) then what could be causing my passenger side one to fail? It moves about properly with the controls for moving the mirror angle about so am confused as to what it could be.

Does anyone know how to acess the plug for the door mirrors and know the wiring colour coding so I can see if there is a current going to the heater element?

Jon.

Both sides should heat up. Apparently a faulty heating resistance of the passengers mirror.
Try replacing the mirror glass and the base of it with a new one. Bit of difficult job but may bring desired result. As a matter of fact, i should do that too. My drivers (yours passenger) mirror stopped heating last year.

You 'll be able to find many parts in ebay (fleabay you call it i think? )

Preffer to get one WITH the plastic back attached.

or this
I might be getting one of this.

Keep in mind that we (the Stilos) share the same mirrors as the Idea... (Last winter i've replaced the crystal of my moms Idea. VERY difficult if no plastic back is present. Had to broke the old glass to million pieces and remove it from its original back. Trust me! )

Ta for that (y)

So it's the actual heater in the mirror that is likly to have gone then.

Think I might try local scrapy yard first as they had 2 Stilo's in a few weeks ago. Advantage is that if I brake them trying to remove them from their scrap Stilo's I A) know were I've gone wrong, B) won't have to pay for them :p

You know I was wondering if the wifes stilo should have heated mirrors just not got round to asking, will have to give them a try. So they should come on with the back window heater right? Ill give them a go

Yep and yep to both your questions.

Leave them a min or two and then place the back of your hand on the mirror glass for a nice warm sensation :p

The mirror in the last of your 3 links is a self adhesive stick on mirror so it's unlikely to have the heating element attached to it.

How easy are the painted colour backs to swap between the door mirror units then?

Might just get a compleate replacement unit from eBay or the scrappy then.

Does anyone know about the connectors for the door mirrors though? Wiring colour code so I can check circuit to mirror is working. No point replaceing mirror if its not the problem :p

Don't know about the mirror covers.

The mirror heating element is connected to the door control ECU (inside the door) with 1 black and 1 brown/black wire. Everything to the ECU is controlled by the CAN so unless you can read CAN messages there's nothing to test.

Assuming the electric window is working then the power supply and earth to the ECU must be OK.

You could try opening and cleaning the connector between the A pillar and front of the door with electrical contact cleaner and/or take the mirror glass out to check the Lucar type connectors to the heating element and that the element has continuity.

Dave.

I've seen the mirror. It goes mirror glass, heating element, adhensive stick layer.

If you give a search in ebay you'll find many options. Curved, flat, heated, non-heated, semi-curved etc.
But try to find one WITH the plastic base unit on the back.

Right, I've fiddled with the door/'A' pillar plug to no avail (n)

Got a few mirrors in the 'watched' box in my ebay.

So will do scrapy sometime this week and if they want more than I'm willing to pay will get one off of eBay.

Replacing whole mirror unit. Where is the plug for the wiring located. Are my fears of it being behind the door card and it having to come off correct?

Jon.

They do attach electrically behind the door card but the bolts x3 IIRC are behind the plastic triangle at the top and forward end of the door (y)

Checked the wife's today the passenger side one is working but the drivers side is not, any chance someone fancies making a how to on this? not to sure i fancy taking the door to bits without guidance!
