We'll my Stilo is starting to cause probems now.

Selecting 2nd gear has become an intermittant problem, either from 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 2nd.

It seems to just not want to go into place when selecting the possition with the gear leaver, I often have to force it in (no grinding noises), or double declutch.

Part of me makes me think it's me, other thinks its the actual selector lever, and another the clutch/gearbox itself (because of the double declutching).

Please help and advise.

Jon.

This is a 1.4 right?

The fact it goes in after a double declutch might point towards clutch actuating mechanism so

CLUTCH HYDRAULICS
Does it crunch when selecting reverse
Is the clutch bite point very low
Is there any slave cylinder leak on top the gearbox?
Have you tried bleeding the clutch hydraulics?
Do you have new thick mats in the car? (dont laugh, it's happened:))

GEAR SELECTOR
Is it stiff to move across the neutral postion?

Yep, 1.4

Reverse crunches when selecting it quickly, doesn't seem any different / worse than usual or that any other car.

Clutch hydraulic's, will have to check all those points and give feedback (y)

Mat's, not to thick, always had them, but will check it's not slid forward or something

Gear selector isn't stiff at all, same as usual, slides across freely (y)

Ta for your help :)

Jon

even though this is how my gearbox problems started, it was on third not second. Third is usually a sign of usual stilo gearbox issues not second.

this could be clutch issue as decks suggested. at worse, if it is in the gearbox, its a weak synchro but usually you would have the exact same symptoms on another gear, usually 4th if second

Ta for that. Don't think its Syncro, as my Panda 4x4 had no Panda syncro for the whole time I had it, and just crunched into 3rd if forceful, or slid in if gental.

I've taken some pic's of the gearbox and it looks slightly damp (slight leak maybe ). But not 100% sure what I'm looking at. These servo clutches with hydraulics are all new to me

Can you see the slightly damp circle bit

Jon.

isnt that to do with hydraulics? like a dinner plate shaped bit?

could be a fluid leak

Yeah, thats the 'damp' bit I'm on about.

Doesn't seem to be enough to be seeping anywhere though. Levels don't seem to be down and it's been like that the whole time I've owned the car (since May) as far as I remember.

Time to revive an old thread :p

Still got the old girl, 145k miles on her now, and seem to be having some issues with gear selection again, although this time I think its clutch related.

Mum was using the car (now sisters car) last week and said she couldn't get it into gear.

Got in the car and low and behold it grinds going into reverse, and wouldn't go into first, however it would with the engine off.

Felt like you couldn't get below the clutch bite point.

Clutch / brake fluid level is ok, and no visible leaks can be seen. Upon pumping the clutch a dozzen times the issue had disapeared and clutch operation / gear selection was normal. I've used the car to go to work today (25 miles) to see if it persists, and it seems the issue does come back, and then goes for a short while when the clutch is pumped again.

Any ideas as to what is starting to fail and cause this? I don't think it likely to be clutch, more probably master or slave cylinder

Jon.

That black circle is just the breather for the box I have a box if you need any spare parts. Got the slave to.

You might have fun with slave as if I'm not mistaken it's an internal gearbox one (I think)
