Hi
Told you all about the abs light and loose connection a couple of days ago. Still have that problem after checking all D4 connections. Have fitted new cam belt etc. Now the speedo has stopped working. Any ideas guys. Any help and advice on these problems would be appreciated before yet another costly trip to the Fiat garage.
:bang:

Did you mention anything about a new ECU in your previous post? I had loads of faults back in 2006 on my 02 Stilo 1.6 and I ended up getting a new ECU from FIAT. Had all kinds of faults flashing like a christmas tree, which wasn't traceable to earth, electrics or battery. Then the speedo dropped to zero, so we were guessing the speed. I found it quite fun, but my wife wasn't very happy with the situation. :)

Hi again
Yes we had a new ECU fitted at the Fiat garage in June. We had a tyre specialist fit 4 new tyres last week. Leo (the hubby) has serviced the stilo including cleaning the front discs and fitting new pads. The ABS light came on on Thursday telling us loose connection. Then on friday he fitted new cam belt etc after which he checked the D4 connections and all seemed ok. So connected up the battery - it was after this that the speedo stopped working.
Were all your faults on the stilo before or after the new ECU?

It's highly likely the tyre fitter has damaged (possibly just wiring unclipped or dirt on sensor etc) a wheel speed sensor on one of the wheel hubs

This will generate an ABS (also ASR of you have it) fault.

Reading the fault code should prove it (y)

It was before the ECU change, but there are a couple of incidents here that might have triggered it. Both tyre change and brake change. The hubs (hybby :D) have big bearings that include ABS rings. Maybe something has damaged these. I have never changed bearings or discs on the Stilo (yet), so I really can't be trusted. :D But I know when you buy new bearings you need some tools to define the side of the ABS ring on them - which sounds like something that could loose their connection with the ABS sensor mentioned.

But what gadget sends velocity signal to the speedometer?

Wohoooo.

At least you (and the beloved hubby) has ruled out pretty much.

Body Computer using info from wheel sensor(s)

I'd guess the BC uses the average from all wheel sensors which pass initial diagnosis so would assume it's not receiving any info at all

ECU reset wont do any harm

Hi Guys
Just to bring you up to date. Couldnt trace the problem so took it to our Fiat garage and their diagnostic said there was no ABS signal and the dash is still saying loose connection. The service manager had a good look round and checked all he could in the time available but couldnt find anything so it is booked in (possibly for the last rights!!!!!!!!!) on Wednesday so will let you know then. (hopefully)
Just to say we love the vehicle when its going ok.
Chat soon.

Stilo ABS control unit modulator

Hi folks
Just had a call from the Fiat garage that the ABS control unit modulator is needed for our Stilo 16v 1.9JTD dynamic at a cost of £1156.64 + vat + labour.
As reported on here earlier the ABS light came on along with the (!) and the ! in a triangle. And the dash said loose connection. And the speedo doesnt work.
We could not find the fault so took it to the Fiat garage but this diagnosis and price is a complete shock. Especially as we have only very recently had to have a new ECU that was almost £600 due to the vehicle cutting out and the ECU being water damaged:cry:.
Is there any way to at least get the speedo working without this modulator.
The garage also advised that if we go for a second hand part we will need the 'MODIFIED' control unit so to me that sounds like this item has given trouble in the past.
Pass me a tissue.

This is absolute rubbish. Multiple faults just don't happen like this (unless the car was struck by lightning)

From this it seems very clear there was nothing wrong with the ECU - or the dirty contacts on it are still dirty.

EDIT: Merged as you want to keep all facts in one place.

Hi Argonaught
We actually sent the ECU away for repair and were told it was beyond economical repair due to it having had water in it and it was corroded internally. (we think that was due to the garage we purchased it off having steam cleaned the engine but we dont know for certain) Got a brand new one fitted 6 June cost £439.20 + £72 labour + vat Total 587.88
All was well until almost 2 weeks ago when the current fault started.

In that case I guess there's little doubt is was faulty (should have read your old posts myself )

I still think the problem is likely to be contact related though.

I'd remove the new ECU, carefully check/clean all contact on the wiring loom, and then replace.

Just off to get it back from the garage cos there is no way we are paying for that exorbitantly priced part.
Will get Leo (husband) to check all the ECU connections but why should it work for 6 weeks then suddenly have problems again?

...but why should it work for 6 weeks then suddenly have problems again?
It could be due to ongoing corrosion which has taken 6 weeks to lose a connection.

It's only a suggestion remember and if it's exactly the same after a clean then it's most likely not the problem.

Also consider that other parts within the engine bay might have suffered damage from a steam clean too - so just look for general signs wherever a plug/socket connects.

im almost certain its your abs module had these problem many a time its caused by the damp weather and causes the unit to short out and its far cheaper to get a second hand one. you will be told it will need programming in but from several i have done they dont!!
